well this bundle of parts has done the rounds on the forum and is now residing in my shed, the core of it is parts from a zib mg42 replica but many parts are missing and some conversion work has been started by other people.the joint between the barrel shroud and main receiver has had the bracket cut away and the two parts welded together as per the real weapon ,all the machining needed to fit the trunion has been done .its being made with a version three gearbox (looks like a cyma blowback box) into a modified ak hop then a nice looking stainless barrel.the plan is also to fit the smoke and light "muzzle flash" type unit to it and Cheeky Chappy for who its being made is also planning a sound emulator as well for which i will be fitting a switching system.
so far i have been working on the parts that involve the trunion and the drum magazine fitting.zib dont seem to make anything to spec so the pivot of the top cover in no way fitted the trunion so i decided to just cut the original zib pivot sleeve of the top cover and make up another to fit, i was a little surprised how easy the old part came off ,it seems the weld was more decorative than structural.the barrel changing hatch in no war fitted to the trunion and i finished the work already started to make it close and latch shut.
once the top cover was fitted in the correct position i could move on to beginning the feed tray ,we decided not to purchase a feed tray as so much of it would need cutting away, so i decided to start on the mount for the drum magazine and then make the rest up to fit.i started by selecting a piece of steel tube that fits snug in the drum side ,this was cut to shape and folded steel brackets made up to mate with the fittings on the drum and welded to the tube ends,it doesn't look much yet but it fits snug and strong .
once the feed tray is made up i can move on to the airsofty bits,i plan to modify the hop to a side feed and have a direct fit to the drum magazine negating the need for a feed tube to insert so its more like a regular aeg magazine when fitting the drum.

Do the new owner a favour and spray that 50 round drum a nice wartime colour. Anything but Yugo green...

What colour should it be? as I've got one destined for my MG34 project, (if I ever get round to it ), and would like it to look as authentic as possible.
i think the drum is planned to be black ,it needs stripping and a bit of panel beating before its ready, anyway there's no point in doing that until i have the magazine parts installed.im going to try and persuade Cheeky Chappy that it needs a flash mag as internals, the ones that have the pull cord for winding them faster,it will look more subtle from the outside than a winder wheel underneath and be more reliable than a motorized mag not to mention more internal space left free for BB's .

Almost any wartime German paint could be used RAL6006 is a good one. Black, dunkel Grau, sand, ordnance tan. Anything but Orc puss Yugo green.

By the way Gav, Ive fitted the flash pull cord winders in my MG drum mags, works fine
Just found this thread today. Glad to see the parts turned up from Zib.
Speak to you soon Gav.

just found an odd hour and thought i'd put the gearbox upgrades in must be 25 -35 rounds per second(on 11.1v lipo),will need a few more tweaks to make it reliable at that rate of fire but pretty impressive.

finally got the next batch of parts needed.
i can see where the person who originally started working on this came to a halt, he has milled it to accept the gearbox into the main body of the gun but must have found that the nozzle on the gearbox was 9mm too high and would not line up with the outer barrel, so before i could go any further i had to either lower the gearbox and compromise the shape of the trigger and pistol grip area or lower the nozzle in the gearbox, after explaining it to steve he agree'd to see it my way and lower the nozzle.to do this i had to fit a version 7 (m14) cylinder head inverted so the nozzle was at the bottom, cut the whole in the front of the gearbox for the nozzle to match and cut down the tappet plate. with all that done the hop unit now lines up beautifully and the barrel is lowered to line up .i also took the opportunity to fit a bearing spring guide and an shs all steel teeth piston ,still waiting on sorbo pads but when they are fitted this gearbox should stand the test of time. now i have the parts positioned so i'm happy i can finally make some progress.
the hop wont be on that funny angle when finished but should be a side loader like a sten that engages with the drum mag when fitted so no need for spring feed tube to fiddle with but just like any other magazine.

Cracking work mate!
Was just playing with cylinder heads with my project and you've found the perfect solution!
Looking forward to seeing more of your work

Thats exactly what i did with my MG Gavin, except I used a Star L85 Cylinder Head, nozzle and tappet plate. The L85 has the nozzle at the bottom of the cylinder already so no modification to the tappet plate required!
It's looking great Gavin

well got a bit more done today, mostly sawing through thick bars of ally and steel, my poor arms.
firstly i removed the op adjustment parts from an ak hop unit so it could be turned 90 degrees for a side loader, next came the first piece of 28mm thick ally bar to cut and drill to accept the hop and outer barrel, it will also have the hop adjustment system in it in the same way i did for the sterlings.
the outer barrel looks unfinished as yet but you get the idea.
next while i had the lath set up for boring i did the scary bit and cut the whole booster cone assembly off the front of the gun ,i had to do this as its solid piece of steel and it needs to be hollow to house the muzzle flash parts ,that is the high brightness diodes and smoke generator.just to make it a little more complex i had to cut the cone off it as well because it would not fit down the throat of the lath chuck.
then it was bored out to in internal diameter of 38mm to sleeve over another piece of ally bar that will be attached to the gun, this piece of ally bar was also bored out and will house the light and smoke parts with the booster cone assembly over the top.
the gap is a bit wide where it meets the gun at the moment but will be right when finished and the ally visible will be colored to match as well.
once done the outer barrel will be threaded at the front end and will screw into the inner ally muzzle flash housing and be supported by the hop assembly at the real, the booster cone assembly will sleeve over and be secured with grub screws so that there is access to service the muzzle flash components.

Great work mate!
If you don't mind me asking, how are you going to give it a hop up with the unit rotated 90 degrees?
the hop will have another hole cut at 90 degrees for the nub and the barrel will have two more slots cut in the sides for the retaining clip so the barrel can be rotated 90 degrees in the hop, finally the adjustment system will be fitted in the ally bar, the hop will be far further into the ally, im cutting slots for the feed tube and screw hole lugs so the hop will sit almost fully inside the ally with the barrel clip extending out the one end and the nozzle hole at the other.
in short you'll see when its done.

cone re fitted, threaded section made up to secure outer barrel and muzzle flash unit.
well photobucket is down so thats it for now for pictures.
the wiring for the muzzle flash unit will run through the outer barrel alongside the inner barrel ,then through a cutout in the threaded section that supports the outer barrel and into the ally housing inside the booster cone assembly.
still loads to do but i thought i'd tackle the tricky bits first, mounting the bearbox, hop unit, outer barrel and muzzle flash housing, then move onto the cosmetics.
also the sorbo pads turned up today so that's another thing to do .
lastly now photobucket is up again this shows the arrangement of the diodes seen through the muzzle cone.

not much today, cut the channel for the wiring to the muzzle and milled the hop housing to seat the hop, still need to make the adjuster mechanism.
