Whilst I'm sure everybody is eagerly awaiting the PPSH41 for the Russian game in Jan, I'm going about making a Mosin Nagant.
Due to the nature of the cheap chinese sears (and more importantly fps limits in the tunnels) I'll be putting a lower powered spring in, and shooting at about 320.
I received the stock a few weeks back, got myself a bit of tube metal for the barrel... just waiting for the replacement MP001 to arrive now. I used my old broken one to start work on milling out so that the mech box fits in, just about got there now.
Next task is to mill out the rectangle for the magazine. For those who've done such things on No4s..Kar98 springers etc, any advice on how to make the magazine stay in the hole and not fall out would be greatly appreciated. Is it a matter of having it a snug fit?
I havent managed to get much of the metalwork in the way of the magazine housing etc, however I'm quite glad of this, as I think the airsoft mag will interfere with the position of the floor plate. We'll soon see I guess.

Looking good.
For the magazine in my SMLE I just have velcro on the top to hold it in. Then when I am cocking I just make sure I push the mag in so that the magazine properly feeds into the hop unit. It's a very natural thing to do as my left hand is there anyway and works every time.
Steve D was kind enough to give me a BAR10 for this, which forunately is the same size as my MP001. Back on track!

Matt, if you need pictures and dimensions of the metalwork let me know as I've got some for my Mosin Nagant project, and yes you've got to cut a big chunk off the top of the magazine housing to allow the airsoft mechanism to be fitted.

Wouldnt be wanting to sell some would you? hehe.
Suffered a minor set back on Tuesday night where I managed to stick my chisel in my hand. 4 hours in A&E later and a strapped up hand, managed to continue, and have got the main receiver to sit in the wood with the barrel aligned. Cocks and shoots ok, need to make the hole for the magazine now.

Sorry I want all the bits I've got, but you could try here http://www.e-gunparts.com/products_new.asp?CatID=3258 I've used them many times before and they give excellent service
a couple of things to know is that you need to keep your order under $100 otherwise you need an export licence, (which apparently takes ages to sort and there's no guarantee that you'll get one), and they add an export fee, which I think is about $25, that being said many of their parts are quite cheap so overall you'll probably not pay much more than if you bought them is this country, (if you can get them in this country)

Decided to buy myself a workbench from B&Q to avoid the whole spending hours in A&E again.
Managed to get the mechanism, barrel, outer barrel, hop unit and magazine guide to sit perfectly in the wood. It cocks and shoots, nothing catches. Just need to mill out for the magazine now and it should be done. Waiting on some lower powered springs and jobs a guddun!
Ooooh and the sights and magazine, but they should be in the post now.

And no comments about the sofa, it was free ![]()

Looking good there matey...
Be warned though, when I nearly chopped off my finger with a chisel making my SMLE, I was using a workbench that looks just like that one!

Your missus is going to go mad when she sees the state of that carpet
Looks ace BTW
Haha, thats her sat on the sofa playing on the xbox, so not really that bothered. I put one of my jackets down underneath the bench though, so theres very little wood shavings on the carpet!

Nice to see the 1st Aid Kit ready on the table!
I once spent hours in A&E when trying to remove the spring from a 249. Unfortunately I had my head over it when I eventually released it and the piston was fully back - nearly knocked me out cold and left a large dent and cut in my forehead!

I said a powerful spring flew out of a piece of machinery I was dismantling - I couldn't do with the hassle of explaining!

I just noticed that the visible bit of the receiver is of course a lot larger in diameter than what would normally be for a Mosin. In fact where it reaches the wood it's wider than the wood is.
Of course it's pretty hard to avoid this with the hop unit being so big and the bolt being so long, but I wondered if you had any plans to make it less noticeable?
It's only wider than the forarm, but only by a few mm. On the real steel the barrel gets narrower underneath the rear iron sight, ive just put the rear sight ontop of it to try and disguise it. The hop unit has about 4mm spare infront of it before the forarm reaches it, so no chance of truncation.

Hmm... yes, I had similar problems on the SMLE. But there I had the sight sat on top of the hop unit and had wood to hide the other differences.
I actually filed the hop unit down to the absolute minimum it needed to be to work. There's quite a bit of unnecessary metal on the VSR hop.
Even then the rear sight is so far up it's put the whole sights out of kilter... I have to use the gap between the front sight protectors rather than the foresight blade when aiming.
