Having nearly finished my M14-G43 Lookalikey, I thought I'd have a bash at an idea that I've had floating around for a while.
Using an AK g/box for a Sten is not new - Warren has been doing it for a while. However, this was designed as a 'weekend' project, with minimal fabrication; it's in no way a replica, but hopefully 'gives the impression of' in true CiA spirit ............
In essence the whole of the rear of the AK remains unaltered (stock, body, spetz g/box, trigger etc), excepting the hop unit. The hop had the feed pipe cut through, and filed/remounted at 9 o'clock instead of 6 o'clock. Feed pipe was 'tacked' into place with impact adhesive, then bonded with layers of superglue. I'd like it to be better supported but there is very little space for copious amounts of araldite etc due to the slim receiver of the AK. The hop unit itself is supported so it's hoped that the feed pipe will not be too stressed.
* The front end was removed, and the outer barrel replaced by a shorter version (16mm-ish dia pipe) to allow the fitting of an MP5 length (229mm) barrel; a longer outer barrel could be fitted, allowing the use of a 300mm barrel (a la Thompson) and still look ok, but my preference is for the shorter one.
* The rear sight unit was removed (to be used on the G43 ) and a length of 40mm black downpipe cut and used to shroud the barrel, by sliding over the remaining receiver assembly.
* The magwell is from an Asahi Sterling, although as the Asahi is not 1:1 scale, it needed to be 'cut and shut' larger to accept AGM MP40 mags. The magwell is screwed and glued through the receiver and 'should' be strong enough to withstand knocks/falls.
There's some cosmetic work to be done - cut longer length of downpipe and cut to slid/fit over rear of receiver to cover g/box, wiring in a solution to losing the selector lever (may just hard-wire as auto), curved block to be fitted to bottom of receiver to replicate Sten's shape, and rough edges to finish off and a coat or two of paint applied (if the weather warms enough for it to dry !!) but essentially, it's sorted.
Having test-fired it briefly (battery died), it fed fine, RoF was good, and no reason to assume range wouldn't be ok, from the impact marks of the rounds fired.
Obviously, it's not 'right' - the mag is too far back, the gun itself is approx 100mm too short (due to the placing of magwell), pistol grip is the wrong angle etc - however, it gives the impression of a Sten, feeds/fires well from the side-mounted, changeable mags, and ........ was made from bits out of the bits box so hasn't cost a fortune !
A couple of unflattering pics of the job so far ................

What a good idea - you'd know at a distance exactly what the gun is so that's half the job sorted. I started to think about hacking an old AK languishing in the garage!
What stopped me? Well, the magwell is a stumbling block but more than anything I probably wouldn't be happy unless it looked 100%.
But, regardless of my foibles, it's a damn fine job. And recycling is very green!
Great work!
Positive comments much appreciated, cheers guys
As stated, there's work to do and the projects that I tinker with are not in the league of some of the work on these very forums, but hopefully it just goes to show what an enthusiastic bodgineer can achieve with a bit of lateral thinking and (a quantity of ) superglue !
The front end will be made a little longer (with a longer inner barrel) to balance out the disparity between this and the RS length, need to make a 'plunger' type mag catch to ensure there's no misfeeds whilst on the move and there's the tube to extend back to cover the reciever, which should really mark the gun out as a Sten.
The 'G14' is virtually done - was waiting on a scope mount which has now arrived, but needs to be fettled to fit.
I have 2 scopes to use on it - a long, thin 4x15, which with the mag removed to give a flush lower receiver, and with a small blade front sight fitted, it looks not unlike a Springfield (makes sense as the Spring' was a forerunner of the M14), but with a short 4x20, on a high mount, the converted AK front sight and the short mag, it does bear a reasonable likeness to the G43.
I've got an AK rear sight assembly (from the Sten) to fit onto the 'G14' receiver now as well so that will help the 'deception' along ..........
Once I've progressed things a little, I'll post some more pics up
Btw, having been playing with AK parts, I have a plan hatching for a Bren gun, based on an AK body, with a second AK body on top to act as the mag housing for the AK mags .................

nice, making a sten out of an AK certainly is different. What other mag well solutions did you consider?
haha a bren gun. seems possible because iv just stripped my gun down and the feed mechanism on mine can be spun round to any angle i want, so could have a sten, bren or (for something different) a type 100, nice japansese SMG
Children are our future, unless we act NOW!
nice, making a sten out of an AK certainly is different. What other mag well solutions did you consider? Had the mag well anyway, so just made use of it. The only other options at the time were custom-fabricated and too much hassle, although since first envisaging the Sten, I've found that a MP40 mag will perfectly fit an MP5 magwell/hop unit, so that may be worth a look in the future.

Most guns can have the hop-unit swiveled but the important part is to have the actual hop at the top, else the bb flight will be effected. A type 100/Lanchester/MP28 (as they are all much the same) would be possible but better from a M14 base, as there's no seperate pistol grip with that (See Steve's Sten {Woodlander} as an excellent example of 'how to' ....... )
