im thinking of making an airsoft mortar, iv chucked in the idea of a .30 cal because i simply do not have the avaliability of the tools + materials needed without unneccasary hassle.

if anyone has any ideas of materials, possible projectiles, real parts ( weblinks please :) ) please do not hesitate to put them down :D iv read about 2-stage projectiles, one charge makes the projectile 'move' and the second is the 'killer', anyone got any ideas where i can get hold of these? or if not any suitable replacements.

Cheers

Rob

btw i have read this thread about it viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4039 but seeming as im just beginning the project, this thread has some grey areas.

Not to p*ss on your topic but this has been extensively covered on many previous threads. However, I can say that no pyro firing mortars (or other forms of projectors/launchers) will be allowed in CiA games - not only have they legal/insurance/H&S issues but they have the potential to cock up scenarios or balanced game plans, and this goes for non-pyro launched systems as well. I'll hazard a guess that other sites will give a 'no' too!

Where scenarios/budgets/plans dictate all such heavy kit will be provided to players - no need to bring your own.

All this is by-the-by anyway with regard to anything that goes bang - you need to be 18+ to handle fireworks/pyro...

It's a hazzard the law might be interested in?
Launching an explosive device from a tubular launcher is I'm almost certain a section 5 device.
Even if it turns out not to be, as C-W points out, it's a danger to playing members as you cant be certain where your bomb will end up.
Pyro is not the same as fireworks, if you launch at any amount of deflection from the vertical you are in bother.
I rather think that if there was an easy way around it the re-enactors would be using them already.

i've already built a Brit 2" mortar, which fires CO2 moscarts. on testing at grange farm, it's got an indirect range of about 20 or so metres, so it has a certain tactical use, but it's a bugger to aim

although mine is physically capable of firing explosive charges (it's solid steel and weighs a ton!) i haven't seriously explored that direction yet as a) i'm not pyro trained, and b) it would drastically change the balance of games if a player had their own artillery to hand.

That's not to say it might not be used pyrotechnically in a PBI game in the future, but again, it's all down to training and the legalities involved therein.

oh, i will, even as a prop it's worth bringing along. i'll let you fire off a couple of rounds too, if you like, it makes a very satisfying noise, even if it's a bugger to hit anyone with! :D

yeah, you guys are all right, i suppose i may as well make a replica mortar and use it like an objective........might slip the occasional Mk5 into it for a bit of realism ;)

Pyrotechnics legislation is extremely complicated (as Poacher will tell you!) At the age of 15, it is illegal for you to purchase or possess any classification 1.4G items, which includes the mk V thunderflash you mention in the post above.
