OK got my Denix on order and a seperate barrel jobbed MP001 rifle....My theory is take gubbins from MP001 and use the furniture from the Denix and one should get one bastard child from the 2 donors....this would be my first attempt at such butchery. I am only really used to converting model kits -no metal/wood worker here or class one armourer so help and suggestions are greatly to be welcomed! (I'm in Yorkshire and have been known to buy a beer and curry)

the only big issue I can see with the Enfields is that the stock is in two parts with the rear of the receiver / trigger guard connecting the butstock and foreend. Dunno if this is a showstopper or not. Warren will be the man in the know.

Good luck with the project, keep us up to date on the progress.

I've also got one of the denix SMLEs, my plan is to convert it using a method I saw on one of the american boards for converting a real steel K98. Basically you retain the standard reciever and bolt assembly and use a cut down AEG gearbox, it looks like this, that will get around the problem with the stock being in two halves.

I'll post a link to the thread when I can find it.

that's interesting, do you know whaat the Donor AEG was, or have a link to the article?

also, if anyone's dismantled the Denix SMLE, could they put up some photo's of the parts, i'm interested in the feasibility of it as a project.

Cheers! Sadly we'd get the book thrown at us if we converted a real k98 like that!

If you've never visited the WW2AA forums and are interested in custom guns then I strongley recommend you have a look as there's some great info available this is the link to their technical forum http://ww2aa.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=technical there's also a sub forum all to do with garands with a lot of info on M14 to garand conversions, look out for 2nd Bat as he's the guy who sells the conversion kits.

I've just registered so i can take a look at the k98 thread, i'll have a good search through when i get time.

Basically, eventually i want to make/convert a k98, Enfield SMLE/No4, Mosin 91/30 sniper, PPSH, and who knows what else, so i can p;lay pretty much anything, apart from Yanks.

I'm currently working on a drum mag for my Thompson, and the Mosin Sniper, though both are slow going due to time constraints.

Just a small list then Diesel! I'd add Sten MkII to that :) I have the same problem with time, my K98 conversion has been in the pipeline for over a year now and I've only just got started on it!

I've just partial dimantled my SMLE and it looks like it's going to be more work than I thought, dremels at the ready chaps.

Sorry it's not a good photo but hopefu;lly you can see there is no barrel at all, (well no more than is required for it to look right), also the middle band does not sit into a groove in the woodwork as on the original it just slides down the stock and is a loose fit and finally something I was already aware of the rear sight slide is one cast piece that just push fits into the base so there is no adjustment, however I've already ordered some real rear sight parts to replace it with.

This will be a great project! I was thinking of doing the same myself, except for trying to make it into a No4 lookalike. Need to get cracking before the VCR bill comes into effect!

Like Dieselmonkey. I think a few of us have big "wants" lists! If only the Chinese would save us the time and start manufacturing them.

Oy! This is Guinness, a new member here and one of the mod team for the WW2AA boards over in the states.

All of you guys are welcome to come by, if you haven't already (I see a bunch of familiar 'faces' here), and say hey! I'd really like to get more cross-ocean knowledge sharing and comraderie going between our two like-minded efforts!

We have several gun mod gurus as sitting professors of WWII gun-ology, not the least of which is Schmitty- Brit ex-pat BTW!

So I know I will now be a regular here, we'd love to have ya'll stop by the mess tent and say hey!

Pete, have you got any further on the feasibility of this? i've just been offered a Denix SMLE on the cheap, and wondered if it's worth having?

I decided that the best way forward was to see if I could get a genuine wood set, so working through the results from googling I came up with this http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp ... erSKU=&MC= on futher investigation they had a lot of parts not just for the SMLE but for No.4 and N0.5 enfields so this project expanded so I've now ordered most of the parts I need to use the pukka stock set for the SMLE and most parts to build a N0.5 Carbine this left me with the Denix Wood Stock so rather than waste it I decided to go for the full set of enfeild rifles and cut it down to build a De Lisle carbine, (I've already got a No.4 curtesy of Warren), unfortunately this re-introduces the problem that the enfield butt and stock are separate pieces, however I've a few ideas on how to get around that, to get back to your question DM, I do think it's feasable I've decided to use the mechanism from a MP001 rather than a cutdown AEG gearbox as it will allow me to use the MP001 hopup and magazine setup I've just got to figure out how to conect it so that the origonal dennix bolt and reciever can be used. I'm still waiting for the parts to arrive from the US so I'll give you an update once they get here.

well I now have the denix and the donor rifle too-heck it looks like one hell of a job to do and rather beyond my skills too. The bolt of the donor gun is nowt like the SMLE's bolt so what would you do-risk snapping it off and replacing it? Hmm how good would the resultant join be then? Also there's other things that leave you thinking ooerr looks problematical....thoughts/inspiration????

In answer to a query from Rhys as to whether the MP001 action will fit the Denix stock I sent him the following reply;

I've looked at the Denix stock and it's the same depth as a k98 one which as you're probably aware has taken the MP001 actions successfully. Here's a picture of a MP001 action laid on top of the Denix, (sorry it's a crappy picture but my daughter has still got my good camera  ), I've lined it up so that the MP001 trigger is in the right place, what may not be very clear is that the MP001 bolt doesn't line up with the SMLE bolt so to get the right look you're going to have to move the bolt further back, you could cut the Denix Bolt and attach it to cylinder which would give you the extra length and make it look more authentic.
