Hey all, been a long time since I have posted, great to see the hobby is still going strong in the UK.
I am currently doing up my AY B.A.R, have painted the plastic stock black as it has room for larger batteries and (I believe) looks more "the part"and stained the foregrip a different colour.
NOW comes the question, the B.A.R is currently black in colour but judging by some people on the internet this is incorrect. If anyone has repainted their gun, what colour do you recommend? Or is it worth "blueing' at all perhaps? Or is it that historically inaccurate/not done?
I have the time and the tools and I am trying to make it look as legitimate as possible so any help would be appreciated.

Me again! Has the gun got all steel parts or is some of it “monkey metal” (that is to say zinc alloy.) when the steel parts are blued, with what ever method, I have great difficulty in matching the look on the monkey metal parts, tried this a few times don’t like the results, so now if the gun is a mixture of the two metals, I spray using “ steel wheels” aerosol from any motor factor shop, then waft over this with Matt black spray, when dry ( 24hr) light polish with a cutting compound, such as T Cut.
This brings out, when done right a nice deep metallic grey just showing through the black. If it comes out too shiny I use a Matt Laquer spray, ( bought mini from eBay) this can take a bit of practise to get right but does make for a good effect.

I agree with Andy's method of using a grey primer (acid etching stuff can be great) and misting with matt black over the top. Rub it down either with or without the compound (depending on how shiny you want it) and bingo: parkerized parts! The beauty is that you can always try again if it goes a bit awry.
It's the approach I'm using for my M1: Andy has an example in his M14 to M1 build thread.
That is a clver method.
I just do mine by spraying them black and then going over it all with metal polish. (Zebo or similar)
