firstly the air version is a spring cocking rifle and very new , i have yet to see one in the flesh but the review i saw stated power at around 280 fps if i remember correctly as it is in line with the new Japanese laws that restrict power, as with most spring power rifles i'm sure that it could be upgraded to closer the 350 fps standard here but it would be breaking new ground and i'm unaware of off the shelf upgrades to help you do it , that aside i'm sure it would be a high quality rifle and a joy to own.
the gas version is a well known and again beautiful rifle but it has the reverse issue in that most seem to clock in at over 500 fps and you have to tinker t reduce the power even to consistently shoot under the 500 fps limit let alone under 350 fps that is needed in order not to have a minimum engagement distance for safety reasons .i have recently converted a gas version to have a NPAS (nozzle power adjustment system ) exactly the same as the PPS kar98k has as standard but it may be more difficult (or frightening) to attempt to do if you are unsure of you skill's in that regard.
Both examples will be the most cosmetically pleasing on the market but they both present difficulty's in the power/performance area.
I recently purchased one of the gas PPS Kar98k rifles and had the chance to do a side by side comparison with a gas Tanaka , the PPS is an exact clone other than the adjustable power system that's standard on the PPS , the quality of materials is definitely better on the Tanaka but at over twice the price you'd want it to be however the PPS is still an excellent rifle and the power adjustment system means you wont go to a game and due to the hot weather find it unusable due to excess power ,the PPS is better in my opinion to the G+G version in both materials/finish and consistency .
I'm not sure weather any of that answered you'r question but both the Tanaka's will be a joy to own.

Any chance of a guide? I'm finally picking one up today, and would be interested to see how feasible it would be to get it to a non-MED version.
