If going to german then splash out on either a Tanaka K98 or do a custom build (if thats your thing, theres plenty of knowledge and experience in these forums), from memory the DBoys one wasnt very good (then again, my memorys rubbish)

US - probably a custom build, dunno if any Springfield '03s are made by companies or can try fitting a scope on a Garand (if it can be done)

British - No4 Shoot + Scoots a good option, that or yet another custom build (both are expensive but worthwhile) for a No4 or SMLE

Soviet - Guaranteed custom build (i think, dont know of any makers of Mosin Nagants)

Japanese - same as Soviet

To get a decent one requires either decent craftsman skills (AND wonga) or a wodge of wonga, so think carefully before making a final decision. Seem a fair roundup?

id like to be british army tbh and looking at spending up to 300 quid.

im thinking about scrapping the idea of a sniper and getting an m14 and trying to convert it into an m1 carbine.

sounds like a good plan Patch.

You can use the M14 as is and work on the M1 carbine stock.

with the 'virgin' M14 you can easily use that at a ww2 event.

A simpler custom solution could be a M14 based SVT-40 in the sniper variant.

Japanese - same as Soviet

Not really: http://www.wgcshop.com/wgc2008/main/pro ... d=1&cat=21

I don't know anything about that gun, but being a Tanaka I would expect it to be skirmishable like the Kar98.

well yeah there is the M14-SVT route, didnt consider that one :P

And i didnt know about the Jap rifle, thanks for mentioning it, and as you said being a tanaka i would assume it would be decent quality

id like to be british army tbh and looking at spending up to 300 quid.

Well it could be done, Warrens S&S rifles are around £550 a pop, and for a custom job it would take about 300 i assume (donor gun + parts and labour im guessing, anyone got an informed guess?) but at least with a S&S model you have a good quality weapon and good customer support on the forum but ask someone who owns one to see what they think

Snake, i think WW2E was meaning a Japanese rifle would be a custom job, like the Russian one. Not samey same look like ;)

Yeah, i was like that, planning it all out - which gun, countrys forces, what kit you need + prices. Then realised i find firing the real things much more exhilerating and enjoyable :good:

I think my hobbies are relativly strange for a 17 year old - WW2 history, Small arms and Gold/Silver bullion

EDIT : *re-reads and steers wildly back on topic*

M14 is a good place to start, CiA allows it as a 'looks like' weapon when semi automatic as a Garand, and deployed as a BAR so is very adequate for general skirmishing :) can get conversion kits for a Garand to look pukka if you want.

Sten would be nice, but being more expensive you really need to know what you want to spend that much on a wing and a prayer. Get the M14 as its cheaper and you can think about what exactly you want to do (and will be a decent reserve weapon if you decide to get a more expensive one)

given you wise and informed decision to look into an M14 I guess you have already read the 'My first WWII gun' thread, so I have no need to direct you there.

Have a look around, play an open day or three (then dislike it and start imagining how cool our games are  ), think about which 'side' suits you - or decide to be insane and do all sides. Have a chat in the relevant sections and look at the various uniform sources, what's available, what do the other players recommend and all that.

Then think about a gun.

For my penneth of what you have mentioned, and you can guess it already, I would go with the M14. But there's no hurry, relax, say hi, let us know where you are from - for there are groups of us that go to these open days and we could say hello in our most friendly way - and soak in the interesting fun of this crazy little hobby we do.

Im exactly like that atm.

Yeah, i feel glad i didnt spent loads of money on kit etc right away as i would be regretting it now. Definitly want to wait with a simple gun and see how it goes (I bought a JG BAR10 and said its the last one i will buy, gotta nice heavyweight 92FS all black before the VCA thing)

Its an enjoyable hobby, just gotta make sure its the one you want to do before you commit to any major purchases. So stick with the M14 bud :good:
