I've been working all day on a workable and authentic outline scenario for BotB II. My chief concern was to involve the British in a meaningful way, especially as Gadge and Yith were adamant that involving the British would be poo as they weren't involved in the Battle. Complete bollox, they have fallen for the US propaganda/Hollywood film plot! Hehe.
Anyhoo, it will centre on the North of the 'Bulge' in the Rochefort/Marche/La Roche sector in the defence of the River Meuse line. Plenty went on there battle-wise and was one of the reasons Monty claimed the victory of the Bulge was his! (To be fair, he was commanding all the US troops as well in the North.)
It also follows on from the Bastone & St Vith struggles, so nicely moves on from the first game.
All that remains is the small matter of integrating it into the Bolton site terrain!

At some later point when pre-game chat is under way I'll change the game name from Hitler's cover name to the correct 'Unternehmen Herbstnebel' - Operation Autumn Mist. Meh, Autumn Mist has a bit more of a ring to it! I'll make the change subtly and see if anyone notices - it will be something to talk about anyway. ![]()

The germans launched a "counter counter" offensive called Nordwind and another air offensive called Bodenplatte during the Bulge as well .
Brit troops were on the Northern northern edge a you rightly identify . The reason Monty claimed victory is that the split elements of US troops were put under his command (much to the ire of the US commander) to simplify C&C . It was the first and only time this happened during WWII IIRC . Patton was the real hero TBH with his 90 degree change of assault and recapture of Bastonge .
I'm away next weekend , but hopefully we'll get a visit into Bolton , I'll chat to you this week ,
Who's playing what side? Obviously I'll go Yank for this.
Jay/Guy German? Chommers a Brit?

I reckon that's what it will have to be!
* starts growing moustache *

German i guess , can i have a spare 2iC for when Kermit injures himself

Oh, I plan to seriously injure myself this time.
I'm going to play the whole fucking game as a medic (gives me an excuse to buy medics pouches and the water bottle as well), so i'll be throwing myself into the thick of it ![]()

Remind me which bit of "game organiser" you subscribe to these days !!
I take it you don't want to lead but at least kick some asses .
*EDIT - you're going to play a medic so you can play nurses with Helga then ? ho ho ho , CW will not allow that I'm sure .
To be perfectly frank, i'm a shit leader. I'm far better at building props than I am at shouting at people. If i'm completely honest, I get very little kick out of shooting people these days, so if i can find a role where I can still justify being in the middle of it all (which I think "medic" suits - plus, it takes away the hassle of finding someone stupid enough to volunteer for it) then i'll do it.
Play nurses with Helga? Dude, i'm not David - i'm not that desperate

Woah, I'm not desperate. Once a year is more than enough, perving is much more fun....
* looks for white lab coat, stethoscope and vaginal speculum *

Chommers, you mentioned somewhere (can't find where!) that you were doing a site visit some weekend. What date are you heading there? Might be nice to combine it with a trip to see my Brother in Manc.

We will be going the weekend after next - on the Sat 18th they have an open day. I ain't playing but it's useful to see how site owner uses the land and to see how in actually plays.

Woo, book 'BotB - Britain's Untold Story' has just arrived. £20 cover price, bought from an Amazon trader s/h for £4 including postage.
Now to research something juicy for the Brits to do...

Hmmm, I'm doing my run the next day. Will have a chat with Kerstin and my Bro and let you know.
Would be very useful to have a good look at where pyro can be laid and draw a little map for a pyro-plan.

Don't worry if you can't make it - I don't plan on getting too specific on what-goes-where on the first visit, more getting an overview of what is possible. Specific pyro planning is a side issue really.

Sat 18th works for me , do you want to come to my house and then we can go over in one car? Bolton's about 40 minutes from mine .
Oh yeah and leave the vaginal speculum behind ....
PS Kermit ....Helgas the hottest thing we have at our events (barring the jailbait at Husky) don't reckon you'd have to be desperate or David ...& she looked a lot better out of uniform ...er ...you know what I mean
Hey ho .

In who's behind?!

Summary of site meeting:
G & D met up with Jamie and Bibby on site. Jamie led us on a site tour to show us the major features then we went round again on our own, trying to get a mental map and some inspiration for game dynamics.
Safezone:
There is a small metalled road that cuts between the main roads. Jamie said it was used by MOP but the road was locked by barrier at the end of the day so I don't think it's true vehicular public access. Anyhoo, safezone tent and cars are parked along the verge leaving emergency vehicle access. They have staff supervising when players are in the field.
The site:
Bounded by main roads on two opposite sides, private road and reservoir on the other two. Mixed conifer and broadleaf area, grassed avenue open area, bisected by both running water and still water channels, lower valley areas are boggy are generally crossable with muddied boots but some uncrossable marshy areas, there are stone and other crossing points. Two main built features of sandbagged and dug out gun emplacements plus a few other scrapes and dead wood enclosure/cover. A high stone wall runs round a good deal of the site and opens out at the end furthest from the safezone with a stone dam/bridge - blocked at one end with public access beyond. The site has plenty of natural cover - fallen trees and branches, humps and hollows and no gay pallet type additions. Doggers are feature of the site (well, it is an F&O site after all). It's bigger than F&O Matlock and the playing area is squarish so will allow flanking and circular gaming. In short; nice size, plenty of cover, interesting and somewhat confusing terrain, varied features.
Camping:
Jamie waved to a grassed area next to the road for camping. When we inspected closely discovered it was hummocky grass and I doubt any more space than four pup tents could be found. However, they do have a large army tent that could be used for communal bedding and Bibby thought that it might be possible to use the field adjacent - this will need looking into.
Catering:
We discussed whether to break the day for lunch - Jamie came up with a good idea. Billy cans of hot food (corned beef hash of something along those line) would be brought out into the field and players use their mess tins. We though this a brilliant idea as it avoids killing the atmosphere by returning to safezone and has a nice authentic field kitchen feel.
Pyro:
Jamie was a bit vague about what we could use, mumbling about not disturbing the wildlife but Guy said we would be using 10g bangs and Jamie didn't object. Plenty of smoke in this game would be great.
Weather and location:
This site is high up, 500ft above sea level one bloke said - the regional TV transmitter is on an adjacent hill. I'd imagine when the wind gets up and the temperature drops it will be a tad fearsome - likelhood of snow is higher than most English sites. The site is just beyond the edge of Bolton built up area - much like the Matlock site. Easy to get to from motorway network.
Jamie and Bibby were enthusiatic about the game and offered ideas so I'm happy about the relationship. Jamie blathered on about his plans to improve the site with trenches and better emplacements - I would make the assumption that the site will be exactly the same when we come to use it, it's fine for our purposes anyway. The games we saw being played at their open day seemed lack-lustre and unimaginative - the punters didn't look fired up and excited!

Eating out the in the field is a superb idea, and as you say, doesnt ruin the feel of the day by having to return to the safezone.

Could the egdges of the marshy areas be used as a natural access barrier for the pyro?
