OK, getting rather obessive now, but were cloverleaf or round flat style studs used in ww2?
I know there are 13 in each (24 prior to august 1942!) but not which type, or were either usable?
round flat hob nails mate, the sell on e-bay for a few quid .

25 actually... ![]()
I aquired a Blakeys cobbling anvil on my last trip to Grandma's so will be taking a more active part in the ammo boot maintenance thread.
The clover leaf hobnails along with edge cleats would have been used on mountain climbing boots of the time. The "commando" sole is a kind of rubber version of the same. So may well have seen some use with any unit doing mountain climbing as part of their training or operations.

Yep, i found both types on ebay, cheers!
The ammo boots i've bought look like they had the clover-leaf type in, but they haven't turned up yet, and just wondered if it either was a post-war type or whether both were used.

Not sure... I've seen pics of the mountain boots in the brayley book and don't remember those.
I think though there are two types of hobnails. The ones we use are actually just "protectors". They'd have more pointy hobnails on serious boots...

My very-post-war ammo boots have cloverleaf nails
My period-ish ammo boots and repro WPG ones have the flat nail
