Does anyone have any backings spare?

Also, where/how do I fit the badge. Last time I did it (20-odd years ago), the badge had eyes and a pin, and holes were already in the beret.
My beret is from WPG if that's relevant.

I have backings... send me your address and I'll chuck one in the post.

As for fitting the cap badge. The badge should go above the left eye as usual. Find the ideal position and cut a small hole through the beret and lining for the slider. Push the slider through.

In order to fix it in place a matchstick (remove the striker) inside the beret horizontally at the top of the slider. You may want to add a couple of small stitches to hold the badge in place though.

Thanks, PMed.

How far around from the tie on the leather band?

The tie goes at the back of your head. Pull the side down over your right ear and that'll give you the position directly above your left eye.
