Proper ones are a sort of greeny tan colour... heh... sort of KG3... 
Militaria fairs are the best place to get real ones... I think SOF and WPG have some as well... they may or may not be real.
Sabre sells them too.
WPG apparently do them.
It was a shortage on my last order, and the one I had ordered for the weekend, so my head would be slightly warmer then if only covered by a beret, arrived today.
Only they sent me a wool scarf by mistake.

Are you sure its not actually a cap comforter?
A cap comforter is actually a tube with both ends sewn up. It can also be used as a scarf. Is it possible you've got that mixed up?
You turn half of it inside out to make a bag and the roll up the edges to make a hat.

Well the 'what we are sending you' is invou=iced as a cap comforter, but the invoice that arrived lists it as 'wool scarf'.
Unless they are one and the same thing and I am a total Idiot?

Is it a tube sealed at both ends? If it is then it may well be a cap comforter...
Well I have put it on my head and it looks like the pictures I have seen of people in cap comforters. 
Now I have to live in shame an ignominy... And the man at WPG is going to be scathing to me in his reply
