Well I'm putting together an impression that's more in keeping with my age and size  so I've been getting the various bits & pieces I need and have reached the stage where I could put the webbing together, this consists of a 1903 leather belt a webbing 'sleeve' that allows standard 37 pattern cross straps to be attached a pair of BAR pouches and the cross straps.

And then there's the leather gaiters/anklets, and the Home Guard specific bag.

I've also got a FS cap and an original Gloustershire Regiment cap badge which was worn by my Grandfather when he was a member of the Home Guard in Bristol, the final things I need is a set of green denim BD's which I intend to get from replicators, and appropriate insignia.

I've been very lucky with regards to cost so far, the pouches, bag and gaiters I got in the SOF sale for £35 and I've had to spend £5 getting a set of poppers and the setting tool as I need to replace the poppers on the pouches I also need to fit a 1" buckle to the bag and I'll be using one from a damaged small pack I've got, the sleeve & frog were £25 from SOF the belt was a PBI find on ebay and cost £10 the FS cap was £20 from SOF and the denims will be £47 so £142 all in which I don't think is bad and the fs cap can be used for other impressions, the final touch wil be the P17 rifle that I'm planning to build, or failing that I can always use the BAR :good:

I'm up for creating a similar HG loadout for Sealion. However, did the HG eventually get issued with 37patt webbing/gaiters? I've got a set of Denims, but did the FS cap come in denim? Did they also get the P17 replaced as well?

I'm pretty certain that towards the end of the war they were probably getting similar issue to the regulars, both standard 37 webbing and wool BD's, I'll have to check but I'm fairly sure I've got a picture of my Grandfather wearing wool BD trousers, as to the P14/17 I think in some cases they would have had them until they were disbanded but there were a variety of guns including stens and thompsons issued to the Home Guard and it's likely that when the smle was replaced by the No.4 some of those would have been issued to them as well.

Lovin' the webbing sleeve.

I wouldn't risk losing your granddad's cap badges on an airsoft field though.

There's also some scope there for being armed with a Lewis Gun. Both land and air variants.

The Home guard definitely did get wool BD. The denims were a stop gap measure, if you're going to get blue-grey denims for this from replicaters see if you can get the early pattern with pleats in the pockets (etc). The FS cap was always serge in Europe. There was no denim version, but I think a KD version may have existed abroad... I'm sure I've seen it in a book...

As far as I'm aware they didn't get normal 37 pattern webbing, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Good on you for getting the stuff sorted Pete! I've been looking into getting home guard stuff as well, if you want a chat about it then I'd love to discuss it.

Have you been looking into the insignia at all yet? That's one area I'm still struggling with.

Yeah, I keep meaning to look in there.

As far as I know they got some bits of 39 pat... (eg the frog)... but not much... no belts and no pouches. 39 pat Belts appear in Dad's Army, but it was because they couldn't get any sliders, just the same as they used bino cases because they couldn't get any BAR pouches.

Some units, late war did get 1939 Patt pouches as well.

Comrade,
If you had a SMG then one could be issued per man....

This is my HG Scale of issue..

Enjoy.

:D

Isn't that too much ammo for Home guard issue?

Not if you're the only one defending the Novelty Rock Emporium from hordes of Nazi stormtroopers.

when my dad was sent to the sheffield home guard after being found too young for the regular army ( thats another story) his main job was guarding sheffield manor castle from attack by german paratroopers. he had 5 rounds of ball ammunition. and had to pass that to the next man on stag.

I wasn't aware of that... I'd seen pics with canvas pouches... I assume MT ones, but not 39 pat. It makes sense though.

Its actually only 20 rounds. The rest is really his wife's flapjack to go with his tea wrapped up.

Denims are a handy choice as it is unusual to see sewn insignia worn with it. It means you can fit in with other home guard without too much sewing or expense.

I think I'll still go for the HG who has mugged a regular for his webbing.

Sounds like 39 pattern to me.

The cradles in the home guard kit are actually '03 pattern. Well a modified '03 pattern anyway.
