I'm now fully kitted up with my 37 patt webbing and armed with a captured MP40 - but I need to work out where to put the spare mags. They are too long for a basic pouch to clip shut and have a tendency to fall out once you go prone. Will the sten magazine pouch work or is there another solution?

Not sure about Sten pouches, but a small pack attached to the side of the belt might do.

A mkiii utility pouch will take five or six mp40 mags no worries.

The mkii can be a little short so the mkiii were lengthened.

Other than that you could use a sten bandolier, repros cost about £50 real ones are rarer than panda spunk.

I use basic bren style pouches for my mp40 and thompson ammo with no problems.

Is this the same thing as the partitioned sten pouch sold by SOF?

Nope. The two large pouches on the front of your belt of your '37patt webbing are the 'utility pouches' and they came in two war-time varients, the MkII and the MkIII. The MkII was only really designed with the dimentions of Bren mags, folded cloth bandoliers and rolls of canvas belt ammo in mind, and so the long Thompson and Sten mags did not fit in them. The MkIII was then produced to counteract this problem; they are exactly the same design as the MkII pouches, just made an "inch or two" taller.

I'm guessing you've got yourself a set of the earlier MkII pouches. A set of the MkIIIs should solve your problem.

They're usually marked MkIII inside.

If all else fails when buying them take a MkII pouch and/or MP40 mag with you to compare heights.

Note some MkIII's are still not actually big enough they varied... The height is only about 3/4" more than a MkII.

If all else fails the mags should fit in a sten bandolier... but note that was really only used by airborne and special forces units.

Actually 3/4" would probably do it. I'll give Sabre a call to see if they have any in. Seems preferable than spending 50 beans - which seems rather ambitious pricing, even for SOF.

Thanks lads.

Note... some MkIIIs come with tab fastenings... you still want the popper fastening ones! :)

I know this is a slight tangent to the original thread, but does anyone have rough dimensions of those MkIII utility pouches?

Ta,
