Not being the experienced outdoor type, or an ex-soldier, I'd appreciate people's recommendations for repelling insects. Methods, brands, specifics, please. :)

UK army issue mossie rep is briliant stuff.

Comes in a green plastic squeezy tube, smells a bit and *allegedly* melts plastic on weapons (never had a problem with that personally) and complelty keeps all insects away from you for ages, put it on as a base under your cam normally....

I think most surplus shops will have it. When i get home ill check the manufacturer for you.

Also apprently rubing the soil from a termite mound over your skin repels insects too... a termite mound might be tricky to find on site though.

I can't recommend Jungle Formula enough.

Works every time for me, just put it on liberally at all insect entrance points (sleeves, trouser legs, neck line etc) and on your hair and neck.

If you've ever spent any time at all in the Scottish Highlands or the Canadian Lakes you'll realise how vital this stuff is.

Lifesystems "Expedition 100" has always worked well for me. Contains a whacking great big 95% DEET.

It might sound disgusting to some but i have found that not washing with soap for a few days befour you go away is an effective deterant, especially when other members of your party smell like they have used a full bottle of perfume/aftershave. Great for a stalking holiday in scotland, a country not devoid of the odd mossie.

must not taste yummy

I've used a variety of stuff. the best one I found was called gator something or other. Used it when air rifle shooting in the fields and never had a bite on me

they tend not to like alchy in general. A old army trick used to be to slap rum or brandy i think on the skin. Also found if I've had a few ciders the night before they avoid me. I heard once lemon juice is ok too so maybe its a citrus thing.

Basically anything that will cover the scents that are emitted by your sweat will work. Mosquitoes are also attracted to CO2 that is emitted when you breathe so anything to confuse the senses in that way will work too. Some people swear by garlic.

So really Steiner, so long as you pop lots of pills, smell like a brewery/garlic sporting frenchman/etc, you're not gonna get bitten! :)

Mozzie net is a must for the sleeping hours though! Aren't bugs also attracted to heat? Or was I dreaming when I heard that flies see in the infared spectrum?

I would worry more about the snakes ( adders ) than the mossies

Joke I know but nontheless - Adders are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 from being killed, injured or sold.

Does it cover cooking them?! ;) Although of course by which event it would hurt the adder and therefore killing it!
