You have to take the slide off to get at the hop Andy.
No you just need to pull back the slide, the hop adjustment is just above the barrel.

Well, I finally found my P38 allen key (in the loft!) - and I have tried tweaking. Trouble is, I can't tell which way - my garden is not long enough to see whether I'm turning it up or down. Clockwise or anti-clockwise for more hop??

Does it not have an indication on the hop wheel when you take the slide off which way it goes, usually clockwise is hop on.
Iirc on the P38, Webby is right, clockwise is "hop on". You can also just look down the barrel and see the nubbin protruding into it.
