Hi, I was just wondering how you attached the cap badge to berets as I can't find any loops for the badge to slide into. There is a little piece of leather, but it's on the inside. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Quite simple really you make your own hole, if there's a leather tab inside that's where you should make the hole.

And remember follow the old rule measure twice cut once.

It varies wildly on the make of beret, the type of badge and whether its real or repro insignia.

Common fixing methods:

Single slider with or wihtout retainer - just make a small slit in the beret i front on the leather patch.

Broach type with two eyelets and split pin - you'll need to make two corresponding holes in your beret

Modern 'badge' style pivoted pin and hook.

Stitching - nuff said

Some berets come with the right holes usually you cut them in yourself.

What beret do you have, and what type of badge are you trying to fix on?

It's actually not for me y'see. It's my Dad's birthday soon, and he mentioned a while ago how he'd wished he'd kept his beret and cap badge. He was actually in the TA but he'd passed para training, so he got his wings. I thought it would be a nice surprise, and he has technically earned the right to wear it, so I have a modern Navy beret and a para wings cap badge with a bar on the back. I've already made the hole and now I'm just shaping the thing (from your guide on brit loadouts I hasten to add  )

Ah you should get him a maroon beret if he was airborne.

Navy berets are for line infantry and similar in the 70s/80s/90s.

Yeah, that's what he was (depending on what time it was, they seemed to change the shoebury garrison unit weekly from the sounds of it.) But he earned his wings while it was a para sponsered TA unit, so he got the wings, but not the Beret. I get the feeling that I've got this all horribly wrong now :slap:

Yeah you only wear a parachute regiment capbadge if you're in the parachute regiment.

If you're jump qualified then the wings go on your smock.

*however* if you're in a corp or service attached to an airborne formation (say a AGC clerk in the 16th air assault brigade) then you wear your corp capbadge ona maroon beret.

thats how it works.

Ahh typical. Ah well, at least the beret's right for him, just have to get him a different cap badge. How different are modern Para badges to WW2 ones? If they're basically the same I'll keep the para badge for when I get that loadout together.

It will be wrong for WWII, the crown is different as modern ones have a Queens crown not a Kings crown.

If you're on a budget I'd use the badge you have. No-one will pick you up on it (and very few will actually notice). Gadge has given you the definitive answer 'cos you asked him, but it's better to turn up in what ya got rather that stay home because you feel it's not 100% right.
