Should ankle boots be left in their natural tan state or polished to black, or does it really matter? Got a pair arriving this week, hence the question. All my loadouts are SS/Panzer if that makes any difference.

They should have several layers of Daubin/Leaderfett rubber into them. This will darken them down to almost black and soften the leather. It will also make them last longer if you continue to apply it regularly.

Boots were issued brown and an order did come through late in the war that they were to be left in thier untreated state. An SS vetran however told us that the SS always darkened thier boots and were never left brown. It was the one thing he criticised about re-enactors at Detling last year.

Not exactly true I think. As I understand it the order was not to blacked the boots. That is not the same as being left untreated. If you dont treat boots with some kind of weather proofing they dry out, leak and soon fall apart.
When I got my first pair I applied a couple of coats of black polish over a couple of days then dubbined them. Now I rarely polish them, except for dress, dubbin, either black or natural is applied before events. They look mostly black with dark brown areas up the ankle area.

So for a late war look I could get away with just dubbin?

Thanks for the info so far.

I you want to be correct in your SS loadout, not according to the SS veteran, no.
Gert was LAH and insists they blacked their boots despite the order.
They do look better darkened, more Military to my mind. All rather subjective though.
It is very hard to judge from pictures. What is un-blacked, what is dust.

I think I'll just go with the dubbin, that plus constant use, covered in muck and shite, should look fine!
