Yay - I'm turning into a button-Nazi! I've got some old tunic buttons, but some of them need a paint job - any advice on the colour would be welcome. :)

RAL 6006
Any auto paint place should be able to mix it for you. Good also for belt buckles, gas mask cans, ammo boxes and even helmets. Dont go for a super matt finish, a light eggshell sheen is best and celulose rather than acrylic if offered the choice.
You can use a field grey enamel though Humbrol looks too light when used on buttons.

I got my B&Q to mix a tin of eggshell - ask for RAL6006, they will give you a blank look as it isn't a Dulux colour  but ask them to check again! RAL6006 is an standard colour reference and it is in the list! (Recommend you don't go at a weekend when they are rushed and harassed  )

Thanks CW - I don't go into evil places like B&Q very much, hence my complete lack of knowledge on paint!

Heh, I did try to get Halfords to mix me a can of spray paint but the dick behind the counter annoyed me so much I walked out!

The oil based eggshell does the job, not as convenient as spray - you might give your Halfords a go! (Again, 'cos it aint a Vauxhaul Green or whatever they will probably insist they can't do it - they can, RAL colours are listed if they can be arsed to look).

BTW, RAL6006 can be used on your helmet, gas mask tin, mess tin etc...

Any paint shop that has a paint mixing machine should be able to mix it for you

Yeah that's ya best bet, just pop along to morrelli's or movac, brown brothers, partco....anywhere that mixes paint for automotive really, just ask for the ral code ya want and tell them you want a mixed aerosol....10% matt, it'll cost around £10 and it will take about 15 Min's. you wont get flat cellulose I'm afraid due to the new laws, but they will sort you something out.

Tamiya spray paint is no longer imported I'm told. Lead levels are too high. Ral6006 is really your best bet.

Should the helmet be sprayed in this colour, too? Mine is quite green.

Ral 6006 is green, though quite dark with a hint of grey and olive. Whilst grey is one possibility shades of green and green/grey are more correct.

Was looking on some site before (forget the name, might have even been Stahlhelm.com), and it suggested that a uniform colour of helmets Is a myth. I'm aware of the practice of soldiers painted their own helmets (stop sniggering at the back, Geerhart and 'Un), but a factory finish is what I'm looking for. Mine is green, perhaps even the colour suggested above, so I'm not too worried now. Thread Hijack! Around what time would splinter covers have been on general issue to the army?

Depends on the shade of green, could be apfelgrun ? Mines the wrong lid anyways so is hidden under a splinter cover (its bulgarian but has been taken down so its german shape, just the nobbins are the wrong way around and need sorting), oh and its been painted RAL 6006 by the delightful Fandanglos, so no idea where he got it from

Walks off sniggering, painting helmets, theres some strange things you men folk get up to

It's a very dark green, I think it might be OK. At least, I expect to have my stitches counted (in the best possible way) when I go to my next event as a kraut anyway. In fact, I might even dress up tonight and show it off!

Kav, there are so many different paint jobs and other things you can give a helmet, as we may discuss tonight...!
