just want to say that getting to events is nearly always a last minute thing for me, mainly transport and personal reasons are the problem. so what im trying to say is can you not put aside some of the money got from previous events to fund the pyro's n stuff and not have a deposit, i have had my name down for most of the events cia and other but have not been able to make it so i would lose all my deposits

You've got to remember that money from games pays for site hire. Guys like David, Steve, Kermit and Guy do the 'extras' off their own backs, and rely on numbers to make any money they lay out back. For that reason, if you book a place and don't turn up (as happened at D-Day, leaving Josh out of pocket), not only does someone else not get that place, but the organisers end up paying for it.
I think deposits are fair, and it's reasonable to expect players to have travel plans sorted before they commit. I come down from Scotland for every game, and manage to get trains, buses and lifts where needed. At the end of the day, it's worth a bit of discomfort/outlay.

Edited to include CW - sorry...

I can see the problem but from a CiA point of view I have to say when we switched from deposits to up front payment it made things a hell of a lot easier.

We don't have a bank account full of cash - if there is a shortfall it comes out of our pockets.

Our games have limited numbers and it wouldn't be fair if played booked in the knowledge that if the pull out all they lose is a fiver - other players who wanted to attend will have been denied a place and we would have a shortfall on player numbers.

Paying upfront shows a commitment from the player and guarantees an event will go ahead - we need to know 100% who is turning up.

We have introduced a transfer scheme where paid players can trade their tickets which has worked well - if it isn't left too late before pulling out then there is a very good chance the ticket will be snapped up.

Of course, sites run as a business can take a normal financial risk with their funds - we can't!

As said you ain't the only one in that position ;) I know we don't have a small baby, but two older kids don't make it any easier (4 and 11) not to mention we both want to attend events which means theres even more chance of a fall out if I don't get to go and have to stay home with small people ;) .

I won't go into the ins and outs of it all on here, but its not because we're hardcore or anything else, but you both (that would be you and your mrs) irrespective of children need time out at some point. Even if you only make one event this year it would be one more than last year ;) . When our youngest was a baby I went out once in his first year and it wasn't until he was 7/8 months old to a bike rally. I had to beg and plead both my mom and step dad, and my dad and step mom, to take both boys for one night each (what a mare it was organising that) so I could go and I started bothering them just after the Christmas that year, knowing full well I wanted out by the June  it worked, but its been a long haul, and its only in the last year I've actually had me time and even then its hit and miss. We only have one income here too ;) and its not me so its usually me that misses out  not to mention then we have two lots of costs its just not fair sometimes

You'll get there or to an event eventually you've just got to think outside the box and plan well in advance ;) I know stuff changes and poop happens but forewarned is forewarned, and theres usually a good few months notice on events,

PS anyone want to find me a job that means I won't be just paying a childminder for looking after my kids and be actually better off, I'll stand behind wingnut in the queue :D

Aye, family first. Unfortunately there aren't many cheap hobbys and while airsoft is as expensive as you make it, it can't be called cheap. Still, you derserve a treat now and again and a WW2 game is a better birthday present than some socks and a book token!

Hell yes they do, I don't think any of us would say differently (well those of us with kids and theres lots that have them and currently can't play (Porta being one stuck home squashing his whilst his Mrs works sundays) One game is better than no game at all 8)

My birthday is the sole reason I'm going to varisty game, its the ideal excuse to guilt the folks into giving me some anger management time and if they don't I can guilt che into not going (watch him notice only that comment  and having the skids ), and its a good way of spending a birthday with some chums

I'm sure there will be other occasions you can go out and not airsoft, even if its the pub, but sometimes you have to barter (ie not go on those easier options like the pub and tote them up to a day off) to get out when you have a family  shame I only realised that last year  but am so glad I sussed that  even if che isn't

Right next F & O game of which am sure there will be one at matlock, or for that matter anywhere near by, I'll come and collect you myself if necessary. You should have said sooner as if its at a site near by its not the end of the world to sort getting you there and back (small hassle) but I WILL and this offer stands the WHOLE year, take you to ONE game.

RIGHT so theres ya challenge (so long as its not involving me driving a gazilion miles cos I have to do that for reenacting  ) and so long as your MRS fully appreciates I have my very own Che and I'm not stealing you, merely being a taxi.

NO lift excuse now

Where in Derbyshire are you based? I'm sure a lift can be arranged... I am also based in Derbyshire.

As for deposits, they were introduced to ensure even sides. Before CiA started there were a number of events we were aware of that didn't have deposits and would regularly suffer from having twice as many players on one side as the other.

By restricting the size of each side and requiring deposits we've managed to avoid that happening and have had good even sides for every game.

Indeed south to us involves broaching Derbs ;) you just need to sort an event you fancy when they go up (theres usually enough notice) so get saving now and laying it on thick you need a TO barter if necs (am sure the mrs wouldn't mind a day off too ;) ), and then theres no excuse 8) Just let us know or Yith whose also offered am sure between us we can get you somewhere

Jobs a good un, see you in a field/wood/urban thingy watsit this year ......

on the "skint" theme, i too have a shortfall of cash, due to my 2 and 4 year old growing out of clothes /shoes after 1 wear on.

and the "argue with wife to go to airsoft", again thats me every event, hell i have to book a leave pass with the missus, usually weeks b4. :D

and due to the fact i cant leave her "stranded" without a car i cadge lifts. (though ill be driving myself to events from now on)

all this means events are hard to get to, i squrrel away a few quid each month, in my "secret" fund, and i use this for deposits/gear and other stuff.

so when an event comes up i say "hey love, theres a FREE event going, it would be criminal to miss it"

i know how you feel wingnut, and sympathize mate
