Hi Guys

There's been some interest in doing some filming during and possibly after the upcoming Churchill's Revenge at IED on June 30th - July 1st.

The initial idea was a small sequence recreating some of the manouvers we did during the recent Hohenstaufen Training Day in the Midlands, set to the theme to Cross of Iron.

It would (hopefully) include footage of Axis and Allied patrols, camp life (which can all be shot during the event) plus a little bit of action.

The best action would probably be obtained if we can choreograph it a little after the event (i.e.: Sunday afternoon) so would anybody be interested in hanging around for an hour or so (the site owners allowing, of course) to get some of this footage.

If so, please indicate your interest here, plus if anybody has any ideas for the sequence itself then please add it here.

Also, what style would people prefer - old newsreel style, drama (a la Band of Brothers), or maybe a bit of both.

If the latter, could the Sven Hassel experts make any suggestions for storyline ?

As part of the 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen - and if we can get some (scaled) armour - c/o Tiny and Forester - I'd love to include the story of how Porta, Tiny and the others end up separated from their tank (e.g. show it being destroyed in an Allied ambush on a V1 site).

Let me know what you guys think.

Gregg

This sounds great. I voted drama, but my first suggestion is no dialogue - unless you've got a good script and good actors, it would be naff. Keep it simple - a montage of action and stills, with a soundtrack over it - a good soundtrack hides a multitude of sins! :D

Good idea.

I was thinking - a la newsreel footage - we could have Stubblehopper or Doktor provide a German voice-over, with English subtitles.

Possibly use this at the start to site the movie pseudo-historically then move into drama - a la the opening of Cross of Iron - no talking there !

I've spoken to Ed at IED and they're fine with us filming after the event for as long as we like - which is nice.

Yup, defiantly newsreel. Going to be impossible to do a 'drama' type thing - they always look naff anyway. Newsreel style also means continuity doesn't have to be perfect. Ought not to be widescreen and no zooming!

Shoot mute (or loose the recorded sound in post), dub over with German narration + English subtitles, add German titles. Flatten the greyscale so there are no blacks, job's a good'un!

The plan with regards filming is to shoot stuff as it happens - and whenever possible - during the actual event, and then spend an hour or so on Sunday AFTER the event getting the action footage (which is, I believe, what we'll be missing).

Hopefully we'll get enough people interested - both Axis and Allied - to stay around for a little while after the game ends and swell the numbers.

I've posted a thread in the Churchills Revenge thread just to make everybody aware.

Could be a lot of fun, and a nice little promo for the sport.

just make sure I'm either hidden behind someone or not in the shot please :D :D

oh and its cos a) I'm shy  and am not headless in real life  and b) well would look a smidge more authentic if theres not a girlie galloomping about in the background ;) hair tucked away and kitted up Che says its still obvious :?

edited to add this is aimed at the german playing chaps, as obviously it would have been verboten, hopefully someone understands my point on this ;)

Newsreel would be good, but can I ask you keep airsoft specific stuff out of it . Stuff with people running around shouting "hit" always looks so naff to me . Very little real front line combat footage exists from WWII because it was dangerous to wander around with a movie camera near the front line . Think of the German footage from the real BotB , thats the sorta thing I'd like ot see.

I'm for filming the ambush going in like we did at the training day, with shots of an American and or British patrol walking into it, with the grey scale or sepia all set to Sam Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron" score, no acting required, no voice overs needed, keep it simple. I think it would be the biz , if we could pull it off, I think most peeps would be up for it, after we've had a chance to re-hydrate and have 10mins break. I'd also be up for a voice over like in the original "Wochenshau" newsreels, if that's what most people want, but I think acting and script are a "no no" I'd be happy to do the newsreel voice if you want.

Okay, the consensus seems to be newsreel style, avoiding anything airsoft specific, but also - hopefully - not just shots of guys standing around looking glum.

So, the plan is to get as much in game footage as possible (this'll be things like camp-life, the V1, 88, etc., and troops out on patrol.

I'll also try to get some in game fighting footage - once I've been shot - but am hoping to stage a little something at the end of the event 12pm Sunday, so anybody who doesn't mind hanging around for a little while but be most welcome.

Maybe just stage a couple of firefights, and an ambush or two - maybe re-enact some of the highlights of the weekend.

TO THIS END - WHEN YOU'RE HIT, PLEASE DON'T JUST STAND THERE AND CALL FOR A MEDIC - LET'S SEE SOME FALLING TO THE FLOOR LIKE YOU'VE REALLY BEEN SHOT.

I'll have two small video cameras on me and one digi stills, so anybody who wants to grab one feel free.

Should be fun - hoping to get some good footage - plus photos for the Training Manual.

See you all in the woods.

Gregg.

Can't disagree - could do with some scratchy Germanic newsreel music.

But I meant the style really - no acting with both grabbed & staged footage cut together in the typical disjointed newsreel way.
