I was thinking of getting an officer's look for running events locally and drink and bling.
As usual I dont have lots of money to throw at it so was thinking of using this as a base for the loadout

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WW2-German-Elite- ... ltDomain_2

Has anybody got any experience of this seller?

people who tend to wear officer uniforms and dont pull it off, usually get pointed and laughed at,

So some sound advice would be, dont do it if you cant afford it

 That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've seen written today. You see, Jimbo isn't seeking your approval of what he chooses to wear at his site or at evening drinkies. No one will laugh at him, no one with any maturity laughs at any one. Even if they did, no one with any maturity CARES about any one else laughing at them.

Jimbo - I have some sensible advice. Buy from a UK supplier that is known and trusted and where you can be sure kit will fit. It ain't worth trying to save a bit of pocket money by taking a gamble!

i'm not even going to rise to the bait on that one - believe me, I could (and normally would)

As to buying it, I totally concur with David - buy in the UK if you can. Yes, it'll cost more, but nothing is more depressing than spending out on a new uniform only for it to turn up and not meet expectations. At least here you can send it back with no hassle!

Looks like the same make as I bought from Hong Kong Kieth a few years ago. Cheep but works. I found the britches ill fitting but Che now wears the kit and looks quite dashing. Safer buying from UK though.

I am currently reading Island of Fire - The Battle for the Barrikady Gun Factory in Stalingrad by Jason D. Mark. this is essentially the definitive account of Operation Hubertus and is, without doubt one of the very best WW2 history books I have ever read! Certainly essential reading for anyone who is really interested in Stalingrad.

Anyway, getting back to the point, there are a large number of orginal photos in the the book and a lot of photo's which officers had taken of themselves just before they went into combat as a "in case I get killed" last photo. (in most cases they were!)

In all of these photo's (taken November 1942)the officers; leutnants, oberleutnants and Hauptmanns are all wearing EM M36 tunics, AND EM belts. All have correct officer shoulderboards, some have officer collar litzen but many just have standard EM litzen. None have modified enlarged officer collars.

Most are equiped with MP40's and MP40 pouches and also wear cavalry (officer) Y-Straps, Some also have E-tools! All have Binoculars. Unfortunatey none are full body shots so its hard to tell if they have EM trousers of Breeches on.

The book also has the soldbuch or Portrait photos of the same officers and in these, yes they are wearing their nice gabadine, french cuffed, high collared tunics.

So my personal view is; for the combat field officer look - Modified EM M36 Tunic. for the staff officer or Drink und Bling look - Gabadine officer tunic.

“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
Adolf Hitler, November 1942

"Comrades, Red Army men, commanders and political workers, men and women guerrillas! It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."
Joseph Stalin, November 1942

Good advice all round

Echoing what Boshman said, officers in the field, even high ranking ones, wore what they could get hold of/was functional

I ended up plumping for one from an ebay seller sunnyside online, which Stoff put me on to. It's not the quality of some of the top uk suppliers but for £65 jacket and breeches, it'll do for me. The jacket needs a bit of tailoring and I'll get him to sew on the insignia at the same time, but it's plenty good enough for what I need. I brought a pair of full length riding boots on Ebay for £16 posted. I'll post up some pics when the tailor has done with it.
Thanks for your adivce :good:

Probably not this week mate it will be with the tailor and I have to order a couple of shoulder board buttons but will do that when I order the greatcoat I've been saving for. We also made page 9 on the Yapton News magazine, photo entitled "A well earned cuppa was enjoyed by a couple of stalwarts in the village hall"
I had to look up stalwart, never been called one of them before
