Hi,
Noob question here -
I'm about to press the button on a full kit but will start up top and work my way down so to speak.........In regards to helmets, are the majority of players using repro steel helmets or do any venture into the 'real' stuff be it totally original or refurbed? I've surfed the net all day yesterday looking at US sites and a few here in the UK, so far I like the look of www.warhats.com based in the UK. I'll probably end up getting an M40 and M38 all painted up etc.
I really am at a loss for the rest of the kit as the variation of suppliers is overwhelming and I cannot for the life of me work out who are the good, the bad and the ugly out there. I've read extensively the Kit Guides and my mind is now frazzled!
I was going to go to the History Bunker in Leeds to get kitted up and have them do the alterations to a few outfits I was after etc but on reading on here, maybe not?
Need personal shopper...............
Cheers,
Roy
mate if you have that kind of money to be spending on helmets then I would gladly work as your shopper on a ten% mark up of course
To best honest mate the price of one of those helmets you could get your whole loaodut for
Blummin heck! Sure, original British and US helmets are cheap enough (OK, post WW2 US pots) but it really only makes sense to buy repro German helmets. I'd even be suspicious of 'original' helmets - unless you are an expert can you be sure you aren't being ripped off? That website shows how easy it is to make something new look old!
Very easy to buy a repro German helmet and make it look 'used' - I can't imagine any airsofter uses an original helmet, or even pays someone else to crap it up for them!
I believe this is the type that most who play German use:

Richard Underwood also does refurbished German helmets (original shell repainted, repro liner and chin strap) which are very nice, but I don't think they cost any more than £150/£200.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Gents! I see what you are saying and appreciate it. As for DIY'ing a helmet, I am the biggest cowboy going and I'd hate to think what would turn out as the end result ! Anything I touch or attempt to modify I completely destroy !
Thanks killacommy, I just had a look at Richard's stuff - fantastic !

I can confirm Richard dues a superb job on helmet refurbs. I emailed him telling him what I wanted in paint/decal/liner and he email back a price then got it done in about a week, I'm very pleased with it, the paint looks good and has survived several scrapes and BB hits perfectly, another advantage is you get a nice comfy liner that will fit perfectly.
I doubt anyone would wear a totally original wartime helmet, even for reenactment, way to much of a relic!
If you are going to go for a repro the kind Killacommy has listed are about the best out there.
I've fired a bullet on every continent. Nearly hit someone, too.
Hi Cosmic, I would suggest focussing on one impression - you mention M40 and M38 - i.e. Heer and FJ. I suggest a Heer impression first, because it's cheaper and more flexible.
Firstly, buy your wool Feldgrau uniform. I'm happy to advise you all the way, so you don't waste money, and get the most sensible kit required.
You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
What Steiner said, I wouldn't go dropping 300+ on a helmet.
Repro helmet and get your uniform sorted. The weathered helmet thing is all very well, but bear in mind the originals are 70 years old, when they were new they were new. If you really want to ding a repro up a bit just bash it around the garden, whack it with the odd stone and maybe smear some mud on it but it isn't really necessary.
Steiner is more an expert but Richard Underwood and Militaria.net http://militaria-net.co.uk/index.php do decent uniforms that won;t break the bank, you want a reasonable pair of trousers as they are going to get a lot of wear and tear.
As per the kit guide, just go for a basic Heer uniform to start, it will let you play at any event. On top of that all you need is a belt, some ammo pouches, a bag for your bits and I would highly recommend a water bottle. All the other stuff can come later. Less is more.
Cheers

As Martin said, definitely, absolutely, get a water bottle.
