Since I've pretty much stopped buying gear, now that I have everything needed for my German loadout(s), I'm getting a bit bored. So, I thought about my gas mask tin - is it worth me repainting it? Does it look too "worn" or not? If so, how would I best approach the task and with what materials exactly?

You might want to sand the existing paintwork down a bit as well mate, or use somthing like nitromors, otherwise the paint will look streaky.

And paint it over with some rust inhibitor too before you paint it, or else it'll just rust underneath the new paint.

...described as US dark green. Hmm... my model-making mate and war nut has said "reed green" or "slate grey", and recommended spray paint and then acrylic matt varnish.

Don't you start! Next thing, you'll be asking why I haven't glossed the bathroom, but can waste time on an old tin can!

Nato green was more or less identical to the original 1942 paint on my can...

On the link ot the GD reenactor forum regarding making helmets look better ( um believed posted by yourself) they recomended 116 as the closest thing easily available in colour.

Nato green is close , my tin is painted real Nato green as it was one of the first bits of kit I obtained, howver it's lighter than 116 which stff like my mess tins now sports. Only MHO boys, as`ever field conditions varied.

Frau Steiner said nothing of the sort.... but she is probably thinking it. Mind you, after 20 years of marriage, she knows what I'm like. :)

Blimey! The Germans built paint to last - I've spent all day with paintstripper, a toothbrush and sandpaper to get it to this condition.

I think the germans built most things to last, exept their Thousand Year Reich, that is.
