:D I'm thinking of buying a Zeltbahn, but no idea about where to go, or what pattern, etc. I'm assuming Oak A pattern is SS only? Suesue has these splinter ones, and it seems a good price - anybody got one of these?

I've been looking for one myself 'as a battlefield pick-up'.
They make great ground sheets. .

I've seen repro's go for about 40 Euro. SueSue ones appear to be about the same price.

Cheers,
Rick

p.s. I'm also looking for a Plash Palatka for my Russian kit.

I've got a Splinter one for my lufty impressions and an Oakleaf one for my SS gear. Rather a useful bit of kit really. Waterproof (yeah, right!) poncho, tent quarter and camo garment rolled into one. Make sure you get some Zelt straps as well, and either strap it to the back of your belt, or onto the D rings on the back of your yoke. Further down the line, couple of pegs, a bit of Zelt rope and some pole sections so you can set it up as a windbreak, or, if you end up with several, so you can build a zelt tent :)

I bought 4 from Underwood about 2001ish for that exact reason. better than a modern nylon individual tent. Its also dab on so you dont have too walk far to get to the display in the morning, after the pissup sturday night.

Richard Underwood has poles and repro ally pegs at the moment. I would advise speed as they wont last long. try and aviod the swiss pegs and poles that crop up on e-bay in the splinter bags. they are not the correct size for german zelts. you can make a short add on pole to bring the length of the poles to the correct size but the pegs wont fit through the grommets in the corners.

Zelt poles for the needy. The first type noted as rubbish seem to be post war DDR. They are the correct length but the wood is poor quality, the metal collar is not long enough and the poles snap at the slightest loading. I have seen them stamped with runes but they are always too clean to be wartime and they just dont do the job.
If you find yourself with the French or Skandy type dont panic, 3 skandy and one french pole together is spot on for length.

Ostfront have the decent postwar Zelt poles in at the moment. The ones that look to be 100% true to the WW2 jobs, for 4 bucks a pop. So I ordered 4 of the buggers :)

When it comes to pegs there are a few things to watch for.
The steel and aluminium war time pegs dont fit the grommets of most repro zelts.
I'll try to do pictures of the various pegs I have.

You can just see in the background my home for the weekend, a zelthaus, 16 sections, very roomie for the 4 of us who used it.
Held up in the sunday rain even though they are all originals and most have pin holes or repairs.

As promised some really dull pictures and a guide to the types of pegs I've found.
a] the common or garden wooden version with metal caps top and bottom and the little spigot that comes out the side, seen back at least as far as the first war. I find it works best holding out the cord loops along the bottom of the zelt. Some times but not often dated or marked, owners names are more common.
b]First war dated cast steel slightly sharper point than 2nd war types. maker G.D. may have zinc coating
c]'39 dated cast aluminium, maker G.A
d]'40 dated cast steel, maker may be S&a or S&Q, thin grey painted finnish
e]'41 dated pressed steel, maker gyq, thin grey coating
f]Not sure about this one, similar pattern and length to the others, no markings on the galvo pressed steel body. I'd guess post war for civilian use. Any ideas?
g & h]The bakelite peg, 2 to show the colour range. Wood fibre and resin mixed under pressure to form the peg. Often dated and maker marked. the brown peg is '40 and wdl or dwl.[it's a monogram] the red one is '41 and GS marked.
i]Finally an unmarked post war Bundy cast ally peg. Green paint finish. They work fine for original zelts and are cheap enough.
Most original pegs wont go through the metal grommet holes on most repro zeltbahns. I have 9 repro zelts and only one will let an original peg through.
If you buy repro zelts it is well worth the time to add the short lengths of rope. They can really help to keep your tent up and dry.
Bored yet?

The reverse view if you must.

Do you have the peg sets with splinter pouch, Anthony? If so, how much?
