Right am i thinking this is how it goes.
M36 tunic, army and knicked by ss - 6 button, green collar, pleated and scalloped pockets.
m42 tunic, army 6 button pleats removed from pockets, grey collar.scalloped pockets
m43 tunic, army and ss, pleats removed, 5 buttons, pocket flaps straightened, grey collar
M44, army and ss, late war BD style cropped tunic with only two pockets.
That sound right.
Cos i've just realised that the SS tunic i bought of barry lyndon a year ago is an m43 but has m42 pockets...

"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
Just to confuse you more, there were different patterns of M40 and M42 for Heer and SS. If I recall correctly, something to do with number of belt hook holes and also number of buttons!
That could well be what you have, an SS pattern M40. I'm going off memory here but I think the SS tunics had 1 more button.

When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
M36 and M40 had 5 buttons. Heer M42 & M43 had 6 buttons, SS ones still had 5. M40 had pleated scalloped pockets. M42 still had curvy pocket flaps. M43 was straight.

That's 'cos there is no such thing as M42 or M43 - it purely a collector's convenience.
There is the pre-war tunic and the only one ever given a name at the time was the new-fangled M44, based on the Brit design.
All the others are merely transitional, stuff changing bit by bit, factory order to order.
Hence the myriad of variations between one modern repro supplier's 'M42' and another's - they may all be based on a real garment in their hands but all different!
True enough, the SS did follow a different purchasing/spec pattern to start with to throw a further inconvienience to nailing excactly what kit 'should' be. And that's just issue kit, private purchase another kettle of fish!

Cool, i'm happier about it now.

Gadge, I'm getting my info off www.reenactment-box.com - go and have a look at their tunics. Kermit swears by them too. ![]()

Mine appears to be a five pocket m42... weird.

"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
Five pockets would be weird....
Here you go, why you can't be dogmatic about what uniform has what feature and why there is no such thing as M40 etc in actual fact, other than as a collector's/retailer's shorthand:

I mean five *button* thats the 2nd time i've typed that mistake! doh.

"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
LOL, I realised the typo but was funny nonetheless ![]()
* wonders where Gadge has his 5th pocket - on the arm like a SoF jump suit? *

Well there is one on the inside for a FFD

"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
FFD? Really? I thought that was for the mobile phone.
* Goes to check Brian Davies book *

Well i initially thought it was there to keep you 'dead/wounded' strip of hessian in.

Well, I keep a little pack of bog roll out of an MRE in mine for emergencies!
