My SS uniform is badged as an Unterscharfurher. At 38 I reckoned I'll be a bit old for anything else and Higher rank didn't appeal.

Can somebody please help cos my brain hurts?
Ok here's my problem, going along with the theme of this thread I thought to meself I'm 43 with 4 years airsofting experience and over a year of marshalling and setting scenarios, so I thought of a staff sargent ish rank would be about right. From what I've managed to look up the rank would be unterfeldwebel? I think this is right, well wiki says it is. That's not so hard to work out but I'm now looking at the Epic Militaria website, trying to get the appropriate insignia and found I dont really know what I'm looking for.
I've got an M40 feldgrau jacket and trousers but no insignia. I was just wanting infantry so I figured collar tabs and a chest eagle but I dont know if there's any other insignia I need to complete the look. I'd like some advice so that I can put all the order in at once.
Thanks in advance for any help guys
Jimbo, you would just need the shoulderboards (white-piped) with silver tresse...

Nice one thanks for that Andy, I've got a splinter pattern jacket and trousers would the green stripes be right to put on that and where on the sleeve do they go? Also what other bling would go with that? Iron crosses and the like.
Thanks again, hope to see you soon
Jimbo
Whilst you see the odd photo to the contrary, most experts would say the only insignia on a camo tunic would be chest eagle (greenish) and shoulderboards.

Many thanks mate. I appreciate it,
Jimbo
Actually, I have a suitable chest eagle - my splinter tunic never happened. Gimme your address and you can have it.

I've just watched "Cross of Iron" for the first time in many years, I see where you get your avatar from. What a cracking film.I noted in that when Steiner was made up to seargent not only did he have the shoulder tabs but he had silver tresse around the edge of his collar and he had what looked like officers tabs on his collar as well. Is that just bling for the film or was it some kind of rank difference? I realise Seargent is only an equivalent not a direct translation. Is it like we would have colour seargent, company sgt major, Rsm and the like?
Interesting thing about "cross of iron", whether you watch the film or read the book, is the age of Steiner, compared to his rank.
Getting back to your question Poacher, the Wehrmacht had several grades of "sergeant". All NCO's (unterfeldwebel and above) had tresse on their shoulderboards and on their collars. Anything below (Gefreiter/Obergefreiter/Schutze) was classed as an "enlisted" rank and wore no tresse insignia.
When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
Thanks for the reply, I think I'll keep it simple and just go along with Steiners suggestion and stick to the plain shoulder boards with tresse edging.
The book "Cross of Iron" explains - he was court-martialled and busted for being found guilty of stealing a watch - falsely. Hence, his low rank for his age.
I have watched CoI with a uniform-critical eye, and been pleasantly surprised. His uniform is absolutely worn out, but he is given a new one in hospital - watch the difference.
