in all the topics so far i have noticed that the only units being mentioned are the:29th infantry, 35th infantry, 82nd airborne, 101st airborne, 7th airborne and the 1st infantry, and the rangers.

as my great grandfather served in the 26th infantry i was wonering if anyone had herd of them and if i could portray them in a cia game?

also know english vendors that i have seen sell the 26th infantry insignia patch, why???

Hi Joss, What you need is for Hanks/Spielberg to make a film or docudrama about the "Yankee Division" and you won't be able to shift for people wanting to portray them and buying the patch up!
Sadly, as far as most re-enactors are concerned, the 26th are just another, ordinary, OD unit which did a job (well, I might add) but missed the "headline" battles they know about.
Be thankful and proud of your Great Grandfather's division.:good: It is one of the unappreciated work horses of Patton's 3rd Army - and you've more claim to wear that patch than someone who has chosen theirs because of what he's seen on TV! If you want really good book about the 26th's war - buy "G Company's War" by Egger and Otts. It may be out of print, but it will give a better perspective of what the war was like for the rifleman than HBO or Dreamscape will.

Like Max says, things which are made readily available in the UK are usually because of media attention, like 82nd airborne because of MOH airborne, 101st airbore and rangers for the obvious reasons, big red 1 for the 1st ID.

Perhaps you could tell us a little bit more about the 26th... knowledge is power!

Hopefully thats something the 'Doughboys' may be able to set straight  but i guess at the end of the day your governed by what people want...

Yes, what we want. And that's leg infantry

Remember that St Lo is PBI trying to bring a certain style of game to the American side that they have yet to enjoy, so it does have to compromise to do that.

Just you wait until the new Doughboys get nicely settled and throw a game out there. :good:

Which is why I'm so unsure about the filmsim type of gaming scene. Its taking something already inherently dodgy and trying to emulate it.

Actually that's not what the term "film sim" is supposed to mean. BTW, don't believe Josh if he says he invented it. He didn't. The first person I heard use the term was Shaun Phillips of South Yorkshire airsoft. This was about 3 or 4 years ago and was in reference to modern airsoft, not wwii.

What it refers to is the game itself. Before filmsim, there was standard airsoft which was just a neck away from paintball for realism and milsim, which was full-on in your face proper real life stuff. No regens, no daft medics, realistic ammo limits, digging holes in the ground, camping out over night.

Film sim was the step between the two. Basically trying to bring a little bit more realism to a game than a standard airsoft event, but without the hard grind of a milsim game. Something inbetween the two, where it felt more real, but was still a load of fun.

More like a film...

So it's not about copying a film's kit or plot at all...

That's a very interesting point of view, but you can clarify what you need to compromise :? . While I'm quite happy to accept that PBI are trying and pushing the bounds of softair with this type of event (and I admire their aims)... why is it St Lo? Like Stamper, I understood the 82nd not to have crossed the Vire River or been anywhere near the town. If the only people going are American Airborne, why not call it St Mere Eglise or Foucarville or whatever? I'm not being churlish or anything, but doesn't this pillory the organiser's historical and authenticity credibility?
Mind you, I don't suppose whatever you called an event - St Lo, Battle of the Bulge, Stalingrad II (the revenge), Midway, or even Helm's deep - the similarity between what goes on will have no bearing on reality of the place name.

As there are a number of people with US airborne kit, and a number of people with US infantry kit, and frequently the twain never meet. It is a way to have them fielded together in the same game. To play a 'hypothetical' allows them both to be together whereas to try and recreate an actual event would not.

Of course I am just guessing, not having anything to do with it  , they may have totally different reasons.

Don't paratroopers always meet up with infantry in the end? Surely that's their purpose - hold until the infantry come to the rescue them every time. "Hold until relieved...hold until relieved..." The 4th, 90th, and 9th all met up with the 82d paratroopers within a few days. Indeed Hill 122 saw the 8th Div the 82nd and 90th all side by side.

I think what I'm saying (and worried about being branded a pedant) is - it doesn't have to be St Lo. If you're restricting the units and nationalities allowed to attend because they simply weren't there then...... :?
