Hi just wondering if I could Bas****se this and come up with a half decent copy? I have the chance to get this quite cheap and maybe with some button changes and insignia it may pass the 10 yard rule.
Any thoughts?-- attachment is not available --

Difficult to see how similar it is. Your best bet would be to get plenty of pics of the real thing (or better still, to borrow one). But yes, it looks as if it could pass the 10 yard rule. The only insignia you'll need on it would be shoulderboards.

What is it? Is it an East German greatcoat?

Yes I think thats an East German greatcoat. I have one (without the green collar) that I use to walk the dog although I have been considering turning into a Russian officers greatcoat unless I can find a real one cheap.

I've compared it to my M40 and the most obvious differences (other than the colour which varies anyway) are the buttons and the cuffs. If you change the buttons and add an extra pair, put some shoulderboards on it and can somehow make faux french cuffs it shouldn't look too far off an M36. Folding the sleeves back on themselves slightly at the point where the end of the cuffs would be and then stitching them in place may be the best bet for creating the mock cuffs.

Looks fine to me already under the "lookalike" rules. No need to spend anything on it, unless you want to! :good:

Why would you want to do that?

Thanks Hans a smart answer like that I AM ALWAYS WILLING TO HEAR LETS CALL £50 IF YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS!!!

I have not bought it and probably won`t now as it would never meet your high standards. I look forward to seeing your pic on Steiners landser thread so we can all stitch count your kit.

They're selling a whole load of great coats as WS Supplies in Oxford - some are just the same as this one - for £15-£35.

Hanschen Klein, please don't judge the rest of us by one posters ill considered comment. CiA are an INCLUSIVE ORGANISATION and always will be. That is why we have lookalike rules, that is why we say getting out and playing is more important than obsessing over kit and that is why we leave it to players to set their own level of kit within this framework, to allow for budgets and everything else.

Hans, I don't know if your comments were a joke (if so, not very funny), or if you meant them. Which ever way, I ask you to think before you type next time.

We are not the kind of forum to mock other peoples' kit or enthusiasm and I think some people are losing sight of that sometimes.

£50 is definitely a bit steep for an East German coat. Especially when you can get a good repro for £80 posted. I wouldn't pay more than about £30 for an East German one.

Thanks guys I was offered it for £2 (Thought I would get a quick £48 profit from Hans though :happydance: )

I have replied to Steiner (PM) and certainly don`t judge the rest of you by the thoughts of one individual. As stated to Steiner I have found you all helpful, knowledgeable and inclusive. This was the main reason for joining the forum and now completed my SS kit in full (obviously apart from the Greatcoat!! )

Have a good Christmas

For £2 it's a sodding bargain! I'd buy it and use it as a winter coat!

Absolutely! £2 is a steal in every sense! Even if you just use it as a blanket, pillow, or for standing round the fire at the pre game pissup!

Bargain! Buy it! Still a very usable 'count as' piece of kit, not to mention practical on these cold Winter evenings!
