Colour BS 381C 499. I'm sure I read that on a thread on this very forum. I got some mixed at an auto paintshop.

Plasti-kote do a 'crackle finish' series; consisting of a range of base colours, and a range of "crackle layer" top colours. Their Brown Base is a very close match to an original helmet (in very good condition) I borrowed, it's what I've been using and is avaliable from most DIY stores (I got mine from B&Q for ~£7 a 500ml can). The standard Plasti-kote range of browns are either too light or too dark.

B+Q cant do that colour.... and everywhere else wants just over £20 for a litre. that added to the £9.50 i paid for the shell means its more expensive than buying the painted one the guy had on his stall :slap:

heh, fair doos.
Just, what with me mentioning getting paint from B&Q, and then you replying saying "B+Q cant do that colour...." straight off, just made it look very apparent that it was a direct reply to my post, rather than a totally separate open statement. Hence my confusion.

Yeah, pretty much a satin finish. Quite a 'sheen' without being shiney.

A reproduction MkIII compass for £6.50!
It's not one of the cheap ones (I've got one of those sitting next to it right now), and this one is very nicely detailed and machined (but alas with a few little errors/oddities).

You'll find you can paint a lot of helemts with a litre. Might be worth picking up scratty looking shells when you see them, giving them a nice paint job and having them on hand for the next dunkirk game that comes along. In fact there were 3 brand new and unpainted Mk2 shells on sale at the antiques market at Elsecar, £7.50 each. Never seen that before. We speculated they may be some sort of copy because they felt a little light, but why would anyone make such a thing?

there were more than that at elsecar antiques and collectors fair if you looked hard ranj...... at least one other 1939 dated shell.i ran out of cash and there was no ATM machine or i would have had it. also a mint un-issued MK7 ressi case for £20. i will be going again . :good:

plus, that service brown paint is correct for wooden and steel ammo boxes etc, so it will get used.

Could be WW2 manufacturer for civil defence? I've heard stories of mild steel copies made for civil defence making use using old press dies that were too worn for making combat helmets (mild steel being softer than the alloy used for combat helments to press, and so a worn die could press few more thousand helmets). Liners vary but they could take the army liner and many might have been refitted with them at a later date. It might be an old wives tale but it makes sense, make use of what you have rather than come up with something new. Apparently not that common as a vast majority got recycled post war to make cars and other export goods.

To the tune of "Mademoiselle from Armentières"

Napoleons army ran away, As you do
The guard stood firm for Frances Pride, As you do
They said the guard will stand and die
But we heard what their Colonel cried
It wasn't pretty I tell you.

Resistance is fertile

Well, they'd be ideal for airsofting what with balistic protection not being a factor.

any non- combat /military issue helmets, i.e. those for home front civilian authority use ( with the exception of the police and fire brigade etc) we stamped with three holes in a triangle near the chin strap bales to designate non manganese steel construction. its possible... but unlikely.
