I just want to see what all the fuss is about, I shall report back on my verdict of them once read
you will either love em or hate them,
they make great toilet reading, you can pick one up open at random and be just as likley to get the plot, than if you read it cover to cover
![]()
also good reading when I was in my tank, you could read a chapter between engagements , great to kill the time
Yes exelent toilet reading ![]()

Dickens is actually piss poor at times, some good tale sbut overly long winded.
You see he worte primarily for magazines and his stories were serialised so he had to repeat the plot constantly *and* he was paid by the word so he is pretty verbose.
His sentence structure is bloody awful too, theres a bit in 'A christmas carol' where a whole page of text is two incredibly long sentences.
if one of my pupils wrote a sentence in an essay in the way Dickens wrote his i'd have red pena ll over it by the time they got it back.

"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
Well I tried that on the forum, however I can't see much of the typing anymore as there is red pen all over the monitor
I've never been a huge Dickens fan, I don't mind his work, but there are others out there that appeal to me more ![]()

We should have a book section thing.

I always liked th equote fomr some chap who said that 'classics are books that one woul like to have read but cant bear the thought of reading' (or something liek that.
Some of my fave books have been books on the reading list for my undergrad andpostgrad, however i never read then at the time as they looked dul but bored in the summer holidays ended up readin them and found out they were great.
I find i read a lot of childrens literature these days for obviouls reasons.

most of its books I read like the famous five, I read in childhood, they're quite bizarre reading as an adult, however I still find them compelling reading
and I was hooked on Harry Potter
I'm going to start on the Terry Dwyer (sp?) horrible histories series soon, bought them for my eldest, who has read them now, so its my turn ![]()

The machine gunners used to be on the pre GCSE syllabus for years, its basically about a group of school kids who find a downed german bomber during the blitz and 'liberate' one of its MG15s to put in their den...
Cracking read and as a boy you just wished you could find a crashed bomber!
edit:barcy beat me to it....
I serously recomend folk try and watch 'Churchill the Hollywood years' its very funny if you liek 'the comic strip' type humour as it has most decent british comedians in it (vic and bob, harry enfield, rik mayall etc etc)

Got outbid again on a Kodak PH-324 ![]()

Bidding on a more expensive one now ![]()
Friend of mine has once found a buried Mauser Kar98k when relic-hunting, it had been partially covered by something else when it was buried/lost. Only the end of the barrel had some pitting. Apart from that it was in an amazing condition.
