I don't know of any actions where the German paras jumped into action carrying more than a pistol. The locals in Crete made good use of the weapons cannisters they found against the original owners. Therefore isn't the pic a bit of a misnomer?

Also the German parachute couldn't be steered so not only did you hit the ground too fast, often it wasn't the bit of ground you would have liked it to be!

Do we all consider FJs to be elite troops? Their deployments often saw heavy losses, poor tactics and what success they had came through luck and an oblivious attitude to casualties. After 1941 (I think) they were only ever used as infantry, unlike the UK, Polish and US regts.

Wasnt eben email a glider op and therefore irrelevant to the discussion of parachute deployment and armanent?

I dont know about gran sasso but i thught that was gliders too... i'd hate to paradrop on to a mountain top and miss.

Market Garden was not a failure becasue of the uk airborne forces.

UK troops fropped accuratley and with nealry all equip ment on the aissgned landing zone, they left those zones to their objectives in parade ground order.

They were tasked to TAKE and HOLD for 2 days, they did nine.... (some elements spening almost 14 das in contact with the enemy with little more than what they dropped with) How is that failure of the airborne.

It was failure of HQ to suuply them wiht working radios and armoured vehicels (they requested tetrarch and were denied) ,the ground elements to reach them & the RAF to resupply them correctly

I`ve just emailed a US FJ reenactment group who have a veteran FJ as their mentor to find out if weapons were carried during drops or whether the training film was a one off, I`ll post here when/if I get a reply :)

Bad deployment of troops does not make them bad troops - British and German airbourne troops were considered elite forces.

I would recommend "Pegasus Bridge" as good reading for a little insight into the British airbourne. :)

The MP40 was only in the harness till you were under silk. once your chute is deployed you removed your weapon and held it in your hands.
Stopped you f#$king yourself up on the landing as you needed to do a forward roll.
