Would SAS impressions be allowed at games set in Italy or Normandy? I ask as they supported most major operations in those theatres as well as other activities and a lot of what they were involved with was undocumented
An SAS impression would be based upon gear that other troops in the given theatre, so theres no reason why not. Any of the more elite units are easier to do if you start with the basic infantryman's gear though. Just check the details on the games you want to go to and try to adhere to the uniform requirements.
Yes, in NWE/Italy SAS essentially end up being rather scruffily dressed infantrymen/paras so basic BD with a denison is as good a starting point as any.

It would depend on whether the event organisers factored in SAS troops in their gameplan as to whether you could use the kit. My suggestion would be to get basic British infantry kit together first, then add specific SAS bits to use at a suitable game.
But you will get loads more use out of being a standard Tommy!
To further add on Mattywheels point, unlike The Germans or US where going down the route of some of their special forces requires new insignia or for people like the Airborne or Fallschirmjager, an entire new uniform, we British all have our humble beginnings from the infantryman, after which we add the little things that make a very big difference.

Good shot of men of the 'Special Boat Section' in the Mediterranean with all manner of kit.
Naturally to fully round out the impression you'll need four or five mates all armed with Bren Guns.
Puttees!
And I can't believe it, is that another original photo with the holster hanging off the ammo pouch. Don't these old soldiers know that's just a re-enactor thing?
I am often surprised at how often you see Special Forces, Commandos etc with very few pouches.
What is that waistcoat thing several seem to be wearing?

I have a small skewer hidden in the collar of my jumping jacket, and a razorblade in my gaiter, as well as my knife.

I think they're just really well used Bren assault vest's Charlie (Correct me if i'm wrong people), if they'd had them since early 43 they would surely have got saggy by then , Would make sense with them all having Bren's!
as for putties, well they are better!
You're right, Dan.
They're Bren Assault Vests, you can see the cord attached to the wooden toggle on the bloke on the left's chest.

Also, guy in the middle (back row) wonder if that's an M1 Carbine?

Yes, certainly looks like it, doesn't it.

I read an account of an Australian commando raid on a Japanese Barracks which explained that each man took 3 magazines and a water bottle in order to be able to move silently and run away more effectively. Thats 1 magazine for the attack, 1 magazine to shoot your way out and 1 magazine in case you run into trouble on your way back to base. If you need more, then either things have gone so wrong you are pretty much screwed no matter how much ammo you have, or things are going so well that there will be plenty of ammo and spare guns lying around.
This is another reason why it is better to be normal infantry. Normal Infantry can carry lunch, spare ammo, spare batteries...
Along with the M1 carbine, one of them has an MP40. So that is five (at least, depending on pistols carried) different kinds of ammo among half a dozen blokes.
But really, they just look like a bunch of pirates!

You just got to love the quad Bren assault. Makes you wonder what the other guys did not to get them, or are they the fastest guys in the squad with the best grenade throwing arms?
Most logical explanation would be that the photo is staged and they all grabbed the coolest gun they could. They may have borrowed extra Brens just to look cool for the photo.
The guy with fetching necker-chief, Bren and fag hanging out of his mouth on the far left is my new role model for manliness, staged or no.
