Although, you can buy bits and bobs of guns, i.e. barrel or receiver, and re build it as an airsoft gun! so it seems silly really, but hey, thats the law!

No you can not. The barrel and receiver are the two main items that if you use to make a an item that fires a projectile, it's classed as reactivating a deactivated weapon. You could argue that you'd use a non-commissioned, non-deactivated barrel and/or receiver, but owning them without the licenses to do so is illegal in this country too. By law, the only real-steel parts you can use for an airsoft gun are non-commissioned furniture items such as stocks, sights, gas-tubes, heat shields, etc... Technically, by the law, it's illegal to use the wood stock or any other parts off of a commissioned weapon, whether still operational, deactivated or destroyed, to make an airsoft or paintball gun - but in most cases the stocks and sights aquired for M1, Mausin, etc.. conversions were once part of a commissioned weapon, they pose no real threat as it's just a historical lump of wood or piece of iron, and are just treated like their non-commisioned counterparts as there's no difference except a bit more wear and oil stains!

I have looked into this as I had an idea to buy a De-act MG42 and convert to fire BB's. I have spoken to a few well informed people and the law is that when a gun has been De-act you cannot replace dismantle or repair said gun (new spec). To do so is against the law. The problem starts when you get an older De-act that has moving parts and is stripable. These items can be replaced only by a company that deals and is licened to convert, supply and sale De-acts like Rytons/world wide etc. They would then give you a new certificate, but you run the risk that the gun may well be De-acted to the latest spec which has very little moving parts. To be honest if you can afford a old spec De-act (as they are up to 4 times more expensive) do you realy want to go to all that trouble? If you lose the cert you can get copies from the company that did the De-act work, some were on your gun will be a number. The law requires them to keep records, not who has it, but the De-act date and sale of the gun. If you see what they have to do now to De-act a gun, returning it back to a weapon is not possible idea.
I have a China Thompson that I have changed the plastic stock etc to wood work using all original wood work. The wood work was purchased at a fare at Chatham Dock Yard. These items are new (50+ yrs old) and never been fitted so are not taken from a live or De-act gun so are not covered by the act's regarding the replacement of parts etc. So that sums it up, theres not much one can do.
Rob.

Ahh right..Well i think my garand stock is all ww2 surplus..

But then im sure someone would have to tip the police off. The majority of people in airsoft are very careful not to bring attention to themselves , or give people cause for concern...So the likely hood of anyone getting done...is slim id imagine..

Im not saying everyone should ignore the law...though

To be honest, what ive been told is that old bill are not interested in say wood kits etc. They are more concerned about the metal that can be changed and what can be made to work/re-activate. So don't change barrels, receivers etc on a De-act and don't fit used real deal parts on you airsoft. If we do and they find out then we all get tarnished with the same brush and our sport/hobby will get the knee jerk reaction of a ban!
Sorry to be the voice of bad news.

Some pictures of my kit as it is [excuse the B&W attempt, I don't have photoshop or anything]. Still need to change the boots and belt, but its coming along. Also excuse the blank expression... trying to get into the teutonic mindset

Nice loadout, belt looks a bit thin but thats me nit picking, top stuff all in all.
