Quite right, it's faux leather. It's to the same proportions and construction where possible as an original I borrowed, except for all joins being sewn, rather than some being riveted, but I've got some copper nails and brass washers to add 'faux rivets' to finish off the look 
It's only going to be used once or twice, so I didn't want to spend too much time or money on it.

Cut some new sticks and foregrips for my Thompson. I may do a garand stock if I can find some wood with a nice grain.

Yes it is, to blanco, blancoed, blancoing. Just as 'to pipe-clay' was in time previous.

I'd have thought all that steel would have thrown the compass off, plus you have to twist the gun through 90 degrees to read the thing.
They also put a hand grip on the weapon for a reason?
I've spent some time around Thompsons and you dont want your hand there where you have it.
