highlites wel... iguess the first was at anton after we had taken it ,i was posted with my bren and three other guys to hold it and there was an obvious focus of german fire on my position so a couple of engineers (fremsley for one not sure who the other was)crept around the high ground and lobbed a couple of grenades down.from my point of vew all i saw was the grenades going out of sight ,heard the bangs then saw 5 germans marching out the bottom of the hill back to their cp,just perfect
.
the dog walkers walking into a fire fight with that "they'r playing silly buggers dow here again" look on their faces when i heard "grenade"and a stick grenade landed 4 feet from them, the expression on their faces changed then i can tell you

the remark"same plan only better" from our co
really summed up tactics ,to be fair there was no real choice of tactics at that point or for most of the day. ![]()

Sergeant! put that man on...oh, never mind
being blown up by the artillery shell
I have to ask, was on the way in to the site, with the initial bangs? If so you were my only kill of the day!
As we lost Friday night set up I only had a short time to program the remote detonators, wire them to the charges, set them in place and then hide myself enough distance away to set them off, without being seen, I found the shower we had just before then had saturated my bino lenses, so I couldn't see properly and tried to set the charges off as the Brits enterd the area whilst making sure the advance party of resistance were clear. I would like to know all that effort got at least one of the Tommys![]()
Well now I don't know exactly - as we came round the corner after the German CP one section went up the track while the second went down the road and seemed to stop for tea in a small post on the left. Meanwhile Dean and I went half way up the track and then over the wall and the rough ground in between, Dean despatching Lardy (I think) on the way. Then there was the hillock, Dean went to the left between the hillock and the quarry wall (so to speak) while I went over the top as we weren't sure who might still be active behind the hillock. At that point I looked over towards the block stronghold in the middle and saw a lot of gesticulating in my general direction. Next thing there was a whistly noise and an almighty bang. I asked where it had landed to those up on the track and was informed right behind me at which point I took it that for the second time that day I had had my body scattered to the four winds. I think Dean also nobly took a hit from that one too. So I think that is two you can claim which is approximately two more than I managed all day.

Don't think that was my handy work, so a ducks egg for me too. Must try harder next time ![]()

Having now had a chance to get home and do some real life a few comments.
Lipton ran an excellent 2 section with us and we tried to keep going for him. There always seemed to be one more hill that had to be climbed.
The look and attitude of everyone made for a very believable atmosphere.
Using the mortar was great fun and aside from having to aim off massively for the wind is quite the potent weapon.
My favourite moment of the day was having been sniped from near the German CP while descending from Bruno I fell to the ground. Sinead came over and enquired if I was dead or just having a bit of a rest

Really excellent day and the site suited the scenario perfectly.
Best bits - suppressing the huns whilst the engineers finally got to the anti-tank barricades - 10 minutes of continuous firing with my trusty no.2 furiously filling mid-caps (we probably should have done a barrel change too).
Plus, I got my first ever bayonet kill!
The jerry surprise attack from the ridge overlooking our hq - we got massacred!
I think it was the really tight ammo limits that finally made the support weapons come to the fore.
Thanks to the organisers - your efforts are much appreciated. The beer at the end was a very welcome touch too.

Yep Barrie I agree with you on both statements as I was manning the MG42 above your CP
, yes you got massacred and yes having the ammo limit for the MG did make a difference
. An extra special thanks go to the German High Command who authorised the attack and shellshokt who was my partner in crime for that little jaunt weilding his trusty MP40
.
I also appriciate the small touches and a beer at the end was heavenly and a mug to go with it, cheers to all the organisers, you did a cracking job, well worth the 7 hourish drive.

Very good and kind of them indeed, as well as the endless supply of puppodums and naan-bread for the curry!

the ammo limmits really did seem effective and really did make us machine gunners earn our keep, they could have reduced our ammo limit as well to 2000 as i rarely had to think about running out but that might have slowed the game down too mutch, only one time all day did i start my last 500 round mag whitch really meant that 3000 was nearly infinate but it did work well.on that not the final tally was 13000 rounds and 2 flattened batterys from my bren, thats more than i usually use on 4 walk on days
.it really was a case of go where we were ordered, deploy then constant fire untill we took our objective or died in the attempt.

Yes,I thought the ammo limits worked really well. Obviously for it to work in a game it needs both sides to have a reasonable number of support weapons, which isn't always going to be the case.

How did the ammo resupply rules work for the Germans? To be honest, the Brits didn't really experience it, because we kept getting killed, and therefore going back to regen.

Up on Anton we all got killed long before we ran out of ammo, then got repeatedly killed counter-attacking. After we retook it the British never attacked us again before we were ordered to pull back. Once we'd lost all the strongpoints we were up on Div HQ anyway so it was short hike to re-supply.
I did see an ammo run to Bruno in the distance, but their defence was far more successful so I guess they needed it.

Yep I remember Bruno resupplying around 3 to 4 times according to the resupply discs I returned from my ammo tin

I was the original MG42 gunner on Anton and fired off a fair bit of ammo there. Other than that I fired about 30 rounds from my M1 late in the game and got at least one kill. Not a bad hit rate!
