Ideally, it's nice to encourage the community to acquire adequate protection to be able to use the 'specific defence' if challenged about RIF (realistic imitation firearms) airsoft purchases. There are many topics on how to acquire proof of "worthiness" via site membership, UKARA membership (which requires site membership), re-enacting group membership, re-enacters' registers, etc...
It's only the selling of a RIF which is illegal, not the buying, so if you were to 'obtain', as you put it, an airsoft RIF; then technically, you're not doing anything wrong, it's whoever you obtain it from that would be breaking the law if you cannot provide them with adequate assurance of you desire to airsoft with it.
In answer to your main question, no, most games/events will not require you to have any membership of anything. Nothing need to be checked. There are still a few people out there who own many RIFs, but don't have any membership or 'specific defence' ability - purely because they were purchased before the VCRA came into being.

There isn't a 'the group'. The people you see on this forum and those attending WW2 games aren't of one group but a collection of individuals and what one might call 'mates gangs' (slightly disingenuous there - groups range in seriousness of commitment). There isn't a requirement to join anything as such. All are welcome. Choose the game, observe the kit requirements, book up and turn up - simples.
Many people turn up at events by themselves - it's a friendly community so it won't be long before you are chatting away to fellow enthusiasts and become part of the WW2 player community.

have a look in the games section, and get on a game, you will meat a nice bunch of players on any you go to, and hopefully, you will enoy it and catch the ww2 airsoft bug.

To echo the comments above, you don't need to join a group or anything, just book in and turn up - rather like paintball really! You might want to go to some regular airsoft sites and hire guns to get a feel for them before buying one of your own.
