I'm not sure that the RAF ever went to BDs. I think they stayed with blue serge Service Dress throughout the war.

Edit... and I was wrong about that... There is both SD and BD for RAF... I have no definite idea what was used by who and when. I'll leave it to someone who knows.

SD is so much more dashing though! ;)

Yeh OK, I'm possitive I'm wrong. :slap:
BD'S were introduced in 1940 but only to air crew, it was authorised for all ranks and trades in 43.

That's pretty much what I found when searching as well. No idea of the accuracy.

There's an RAF chappie in the film "Dunkirk"... you probably just want to copy what he's wearing.

Heh... well postwar non-serge RAF SD is available and should look the part.

See SgtAsh's pic above... he's definitely not in walking out kit. The boots and flying hat thingy give it away.

i have it on good authority, that modern EM RAF dress uniforms can be had for 50quid. and they are almost(slightly lighter and cotton wool mix) the same as ww2. close enough to pass i would think

Sgt Ash is using his old RAF dress uniform as a basis for the impression IIRC...

I imagine it is, speaking as someone who goes commando and last bought underpants in 1985. But then maybe that's too much information...

Heh, I haven't quite decided what I'll do - S Staffs left from Dunkirk, maybe I'll be one of them - injured and left behind and made my own way to the west? I don't want to de-badge the blouse so I'll be in shirt sleeves and trousers. Then again, I had fancied an RAF/Submariner jumper - I was going to get one for Glocke but WPG were out of stock but I see they have them back in again, and its my birthday soon

At this point I suspect SStaff weren't airborne either... so no maroon beret, etc...

You need to debadge your blouse chommers...

Another option is to get some No2s and be an officer in SD. hehe...

LOL, why do you thing I would go as glider borne S Staffs in Denison & maroon beret :slap: ? Here is some guff if you are interested. http://59div.morssweb.com/?1-6_1940
As I said, I ain't debadging the blouse so i won't wear it, shirtsleeves only.

@ Wladek

I was just unsure how you were going as SStaffs... We know about the denison and I never mentioned that. I mentioned the beret... which hasn't been mentioned before anywhere as being inappropriate for dunkirk.

Well your shirt is a good-un so that idea is good... (grumble grumble, where's mine... damn skiddle... lol)

Aye, good point about the helmet - I'll emphasise that a bit more in the required kit section.

Yes, I've put that down as an option for jerry too. Always a good plan to bring a greatcoat if you have one - no guarantee on the weather, useful as bed coverings on pillows even if you don't wear it during the day!

They flew in SD or flying suits in France. White ovrall with shirt and tie underneath would do. Great target though.

I have heard that in France in 1940 regulations still required pilots to fly in SD, shirt (with a starched detachable collar) and tie! That could be a myth, though.

"Suits Aircrew" were the first RAF BDs introduced in December 1940. Not strictly right for France, but you can get them at WPG for a song ATM:

I am thinking of a set myself, just because I like 'em. :)
