Back to the original thread. To my mind, the only "dodgy" thing we've had so far (and on the scale of dodgyness, its actually pretty low) was that bloke with the Allgemeine SS/Gestapo kinda loadout, and I think it was handled perfectly...

For the record, I hold no allegiance to any political party. I do however always visit the polling station even if it is to ruin my ballot because I don't want to be counted in the 'apathetic' category. If I don't vote for a specific party it's because I don't want to, not because I can't be bothered.

But, I'm also reminded of a letter I had through the door from Labour featuring Ross Kemp telling me to vote Labour because there was a BNP candidate in my ward and best way to avoid the BNP getting in was to tactically vote for Labour. This was their campaign!
They said, in a very inflammatory way, that to avoid the BNP's xenophobic fear-mongering ways I should vote Labour. The irony in a letter inciting fear by saying that if I don't vote for Labour the BNP will get in, who are a fear-mongering party, was not lost on me.
FOR THE RECORD: The last party in the world I would ever vote for is the BNP. Re-reading my posts it does look like I hold a flame for them in some way. ABSOLUTELY NOT. But having seen some of the Labour councillor's tactics in my area, and some of the Labour Government's infringments of civil liberties recently I don't see them as even remotely deserving of my vote.

Also O/T - My aunt in America refused to fly over for my Grandmother's 95th party as she was fearful of terrorist attack in the sky - the point that air flight has never been more secure because of the reaction to threats was completely lost on her....

A point I made to my MP last year. How many people have actually been a victim of terrorism in this country? A few thousand? Compare that to the figures of people who die of heart disease, or lung cancer. And what are people more afraid of?
People continue to eat poorly, smoke and don't exercise regularly. Tell them to get on a bus with a Muslim who's wearing a backpack and they'll hesitate.
This country is propagating fear as a means of control. Be it within party politics, foreign policy or education and they are propagating it with an "Emperor's New Clothes" policy of if you don't believe it you're stupid....or a danger that needs to be dealt with. Propagating that fear means you can pass laws and remove civil liberties in the name of creating safety. ID cards, mass CCTV, incarceration without charge are all laws everyone would have baulked at before 9/11, now it's just a few 'pinko liberals' who protest and are castigated for it.
BTW, I just went to the polling station and had a choice of:
Conservative (I have a memory I'm afraid)
Labour (Hate the status quo)
Respect (George Galloway? Please.)
BNP (No comment)
UKIP (Jesus H Christ)
I wrote 'None of the above' across the ballot.

BTW, I've not flown since 9/11... not cos I'm scared or terrorism. No. Its because, although I do love travelling and flying, I didn't like airports and the security checks and stuff you have to go through and the idea of having to go through more of that shite just puts me off... As a result I've had quite a few lovely holidays around the British Isles over the last few years... I'd been to every continent (other than South America) anyway...

We were at war with the Soviets , and when that finished, we had ot find a war with another large power (all Muslims , now re branded at fundamentalist terrorists) . It's all about keeping people under control through fear as Stephen rightly points out , if you recall in the book the war changes from Eurasia to Eastasia with a lot of propaganda effort .
As a child of the 80's growing up in a Naval base, what really ammused me in the 90s is when it became clear the "terrifying Soviets forces" that I had grown up in fear off were actually a bag of shite. Conscripts that didn't want to fight , weapons that didn't work and ships that spent most of the time rusting at anchor .
So the whole Al Quaida thing now leaves me totally unfrightened . Yes we've had bombs in London by a few home grown nutters, but feck all like the IRA used ot put on (Warrington , Manchester , Brighton, London etc)

I've been swayed both ways with Global Warming stuff... It may or may not be a problem... I kind of view it the same way as I do religion... I'm an agnostic with a CofE background... Can we honestly be sure that its a real problem? Best to be safe rather than sorry though surely?
