I was SS at Jedburgh and was part of the capturing force responsible for the capture of a second lot of prisoners for the Glorious Reich, having not taken part in the interrogations myself it was obvious that it was to add that little bit extra to the weekend than the usual WW2 airsoft day. A bag on the head, the odd uncomfortable position and being shouted at with no physical contact and after about 20mins they were released back into circulation. Some people may have found this process a bit uncomfortable for them and thats ok, this type of thing is not to everyones liking, however, I for one do not mind this treatment if captured by those Dirty Peasant Russians as I see it as a bit of fun, an added extra to the game.
The CIA organisers are not asking you to do anything you do not want to, each individual gets something different from the games played, whether its interrogation or playing throughout the night the choice is yours, I for one do not think less of someone no matter what their personal preference is. :P

I honestly don't mind either way. I've experienced capture at Jedburgh, which wasn't that bad - I hammed it up a bit, actually. :giggle: I never thought of what the captors might have thought, since we all knew what would be in store for us. I don't know what WWII interrogation techniques in the field would have been, apart from threatening to kill the prisoner!

Yes I think the Allo Allo..... "Vat is your name Tommy" aspect to this is being missed somewhat . B&H's answer of "Lt Richard Sole" caused us some amusement . Role play rather than torture was the name of the game .

FFS anyone would think we're talking about cattle prods and nutcrackers here . :ghey:

Anyway , seems broadly split between those who think it adds something and those who don't .

Heh, I had nothing to do with the regrettable deaths of several fine Allied servicemen who lost their lives to an over-zealous subordinate, despite my best efforts to restrain him. My report said.

Although, to be serious, that capture/interrogation/despatch thing was a seminal moment for me in WW2 airsoft, an epiphany if you like, something I 'd been looking for since we started.

You see, we look on it as 'just a game' - spending ridiculous amounts of time and money on kit, agonising over whether this or that is 'correct'. Yet the enactment we are depicting is hellishly serious, unimaginably grave. So completely awful that logically we must be sick to tit around in woods acting the goat 'pretending'. So with that spectre sitting on one shoulder and the hobby/fun/goodies and baddies thing sitting on the other shoulder I, as I suspect do many others, constantly vacillate between the two. And of course we all make our own justifications for doing what we do, and ultimately decide it's OK.

So granted, shooting people with plastic pellets is fun. Dressing up is fun. Research is fun. Playing at officers is fun. Having a natter with mates is fun. But I have always sought (indeed CiA battles are designed to provide) some inner feeling of 'being there'. What would it have been really like to be captured? What would it have really been like to be trapped or hunted down? What would it have been like in a 'it's him or me' moment? How did men endure the unendurable? Would I be a nasty brute in war or a compassionate softy?

But at that moment, in a forest in Wales in July, it all hit home how dreadful man can be to fellow man, what impossible situations people are put in on both sides, how cheap life can be. Yes, I felt uneasy, several times I was minded to put a stop to it. It was horrible to see, shocking even. But it was honest and truthful and given the comfy, safe small world I live in, the closest I could get to some sort of understanding of what my grandparents went through. In a namby-pamby, health and safety, full-bellied, comfy sleeping bag sort of way.

Would I want this at every airsoft game? Nah, been there, done that scenario - but I do seek that 'something' that makes me understand, that 'something' that doesn't make me feel like a self-indulgent berk arseing around shooting people and dressing up as a soldier for fun. Please, please don't think WW2 airsoft events are all about how many centimetres your badge is from the shoulder or fiddling about with tight bore barrels and soft hop rubbers. That's all flimflam. There is much, much more to be explored, WW2 airsoft can be deeper than that. And it's all inside your head. Cerebral. And we've called it being there.

And this is something, as a far as I am aware, is unique to airsoft and hasn't happened in selfish blank fire battles or living history displays at shows or indeed hopelessly unrealistic public show battles.

A well written and well thought out piece.

But I know why I do this. It's not for any higher purpose, it's not to try and feel the same way my forebears did. Believe me I've done enough thinking about that to know that I'm not as tough as they were, that I have it easy and that they paid in blood to make the world as it is now so that I can play these silly games in safety.

No, I do this because I enjoy it, plain and simple. If I didn't then I wouldn't bother. Today I came very close to jacking it all in because what is proposed is not something I would enjoy taking part in.

Someone sent me a pm asking me to attend this event because "your infectious laugh always makes me smile." I can't see this happening with fake torture going on around me. It's not funny and for me it's a step too far.

That's fair enough, of course. But CiA events set out to challenge and test you, be it physically and/or mentally - that has always been explicit, I've said so in many game briefings both written and verbal. It's what makes CiA events different from anybody else's. It's the difference between having a stroll in the local park or walking the Peaks (but not climbing Ben Nevis, that's hard core mentalism). Walking the park is a pleasant enough way to spend an afternoon but walking the Peaks is both a pleasant way to spend a weekend AND there is a sense of achievement at the end of it. (Not that you would ever catch me in a cagoule and walking boots, but you get the point  )

And no, seeing a bedraggled and dejected bunch of hooded soldiers isn't 'fun' but for half an hour out of a weekend it at least it puts everything in context, I imagine the same was felt by the recipients too. It's not life or death or anything remotely resembling it, but it makes you think. It's not a higher purpose, it's just about getting more out of the weekend. It won't be everyone's cup of tea for sure - that's why there is a wide choice of events and game styles - but for those that want it CiA deliver.

Some interesting ideas there and since most of people have now expressed an interest one way or the other and their views I have now locked this thread for further discussion .

As a final point from the person who drafted V1, V2 and V3 of this particular event , I would like to make it quite clear to all , that as CW says above we have always striven to make our events demanding , enjoyable, different , challenging and fun .

It looks like we will be blessed with good weather , good camping , and we have lots of interesting things to keep both sides occupied and engaged for the weekend . As ever there is something for most people , and my belief is we get as much out as we put in to these things.

if anyone has any further question, queries or comments , my phone number is 07017031073 . Call me .
