, if memory serves me well it was referred to as the Union Flag in the King's Proclamation in 1630 something!
I just think Jack sounds a bit common or slangy and doesn't do justice to our glorious, national flag.
also if you call it the union jack, you can also be referring to the jack flag flown above us navy ships....
