That's the type of look I'm going for. Very excited to get a new set of uniform.

Ralph

Unfortunately...absolutely everything (except a Garand!)! I 'might' be able to put some stuff together before this, but I dont want to book a space only to then have to back out at the 11th hour.

I'll start collecting and see where i am in a month. If there is still space, then i'll book on :good:

These are supposed to be a size 9 which is largest they do I think. They're nice and comfy but a little big actually so I might order one size down.

Ralph

Looking good Chris. How does it look with the rest of the kit?

I've order some more tabi shoes in the next size down so if they fit OK I'll sell the larger pair.

Regards,

Ralph

This thread appears to have become highjacked by the goddamn Japanese forces!

Are their any sources (online or otherwise) for US Marine kit for Guadalcanal Campaign? Am I right that camo patterened helmet covers were a later war development? Were gaiters worn?

Thanks for any help guys.

I found a gallery of various photos of Marines in Guadalcanal. Can't seem to see any camo covers and it doesn't look like any are wearing gaiters.

Granger's correct; you'll struggle to find any camo by 1942.

The Marines in the Guadalcanal campaign wore the 1941 utility uniform. This was a green set of overalls that replaced the summer service uniform for combat use. The summer service uniform, khaki, was worn during the early fighting on Guam and Wake Island with the M1917a1 steel helmet. It was seen on Guadalcanal infrequently and usually by Officers who wanted to stand out from the peons. That changed very quickly once the Japanese clocked onto it. Naval Corpsmen also stuck with the summer service at first.

Camo helmet covers came in by the very tail end on 1942 to early 1943.

Oh and whilst I'm at it, the Japanese wore an absolute mish mash of kit. They even captured stocks of South African battle dress in Rangoon in 1942 and whilst a lot of this was parcelled off to the INA in Burma, the trousers could easily have been issued. They shot anyone wearing it out of hand in the early stages of the fighting in Burma as it was often mistaken for Japanese issue, the assumption being they'd killed a Japanese soldier and stole his troo's.

From the (limited) research I've done it would appear that initially helmet covers weren't used but by Marines, however there are several photos - including a great one of a .30 cal. Gun team - using them in late 1942/early 1943. While I know its a little historically in accurate to use them in this game but for the sake of easy identifier I think their use is a great idea. As Granger said above, photo evidence shows almost no gaiters. Lots of torn or rolled up trousers cuffs as a result though lol. Rifles of the time would have mainly been the M1903 Springfield, with the Garand coming later but again for the game Garands and any bolt action rifle is the way forward (he says using a Thompson....hangs his head in shame lol). Webbing is pretty basic. Belt with differening number of pouches, a canteen and cover, maybe two, sometimes a harness, a first aid pouch here and there. I'll post a pic of my gear in a bit. Cheers all, Tom

Damn...pipped to the post by Allenby...lol

Also just to add to what Allenby said about the summer service uniform, there is a few photos floating around that show the summer service shirt in use with P41 dungarees (trousers) in the early part of the campaign too. From a looks point of view its a nice way (for us airsofters, collectors, re-enactors etc.) to differentiate between early, mid and late war.

Cheers, Tom

ok as i said this before at this time marines did not wear helmet covers but the game requires them still as set out in the rules to make identifaction easier and to give the marine look and the only marine kit we have said needs to be of marine kit over plain infantry
