I've had a Garand sling from SoF for about a week now, and to be honest I tried my best with it, reading US army manuals, looking at pics on the internet...

But I can't figure out how to attach it properly, and it's driving me up the christing wall. Help!

Do you have the one with 2 hooks or with 3 hooks.
The 3-hook one is a BAR-belt that is often used on a Garand for shooting competitions.

This is how the 2-hook one attaches:

Shit. Mine has three hooks, that's where I've been going wrong. Still, it was sold as a Garand sling.

Would cutting a hook off do the job?

I doubt if the lengts of the straps would be correct if you try to convert it.
Of course it's your money/sling.

Perhaps you should have a look at how the BAR sling is attached and do the same on your M1.

The BAR sling offers better adjustability to certain shooting stances that's why you'll find them on Garands quite often here in the Netherlands.

We have those "Garand" slings from SoF too and eventually found some pictures of a three hooked ones put together.

If you can wait till the weekend will post a picture of them.

Don't know how wrong or right they are, but they look OK.

The main problem with them being, of course, that the leather is about 5mm thick and supple as cardboard but that's another issue.

It might not be authentic, but I went for a new Bren webbing strap for my M14 - it has a spring-loaded hook either end - easy to put on, easy to sling the rifle over your shoulder.

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier

I hear that. Was a wee bit disappointed, if truth be told, but I wanted an authentic sling. Pics would be great, I fitted mine off a picture, but it was unclear and looked crap on.

Be sure to give the leather a hefty dose of leather conditioner, that'll make it more supple and darken the leather nicely. I use Rapide wax myself.

The modern leather sometimes used in reproductions has been treated, painted or dyed. I don't like that very much personally. It doesn't absorb the conditioner very wel.

Here's how we assembled ours.

Remember I'm not sure how accurate (or not) this is but it was copied off a couple of pictures found on the web, which I can no longer locate.

If I was buying a sling again I would get one from here -

http://www.thegunner.net/shop/lespare.htm

Click M1 Garand on the menu on the left, repro sling is

Here's some information I found a while ago when I was trying to sort out how to fit this type of sling;

Thanks a lot for the advice, everyone. That website is great! I'd never heard of it, but it has things i've been trying to source, like M3 slings and accessories.

I used the diagram at the bottom to do my sling, and yes SOF sold me a BAR sling too!

Why people still buy stuff from them I'll never know.

Maybe the fact they always have stuff in stock that is on the website, the service is verry good, the stuff they sell is to a predictable quality(OK it might be labelled wrong) they are reliable, and if you have any problems they are only the other end of the M6(The shop). Oh and you can catch them at most show in the IK.

They have a pretty comprehensive list of stock, and the website is easy to use, too.

Does anyone have a picture of how the BAR sling goes on? The slings website doen't have a good one.

I too have fallen prey to the SOF M1 BAR sling scam. I've put it the rifle on as per the picture Pete-59 posted above and it works, but the extra hook (which is on the end of the what should be the feed end on the M1 sling)) pokes through to the "inner" side of the sling and catches on your coat/webbing.

I reckon cutting off this 3rd hook would be fine, even though there isn't as much length in the strap, it would still work/look okay, but I'd rather sling it properly.

Cheers

You could just use a Thompson slling like I have. It's easy to put on and is authentic for spring 44 and onwards. The best place to get them is WPG.
