Bought a helmet net from SoF months ago, but at the time I felt it looked wrong, so didn't bother. Looking at it again last night, it looks OK, but it's a bright green colour - which leads me to believe it's not a US one at all. What colour should it be, and are there any ways in which I can lighten the one I have. Pics appreciated.

Hi try this link for helmet nets etc..

Hope this helps
The US used British Made nets so either Green, Khaki or Brown are acceptable but the majority of US Units were issued the Green or Khaki and maybe a few two tone green canadian nets.
We got some British helmet nets from SoF (I think they sell the same ones as US) and they were a very bright green colour.
Just soak them in water and give them a scrub and you should find all the excess colouring comes off, leaving them a nice dark green.
Thanks for the help all, I'll do that tonight.
Well, did it last night and...
Nothing happened. Is there a way of dying it darker green. If it helps (and is possible) I still have a pot of US OD paint from doing my helmet shell.
Also, I've been finding it quite difficult to get the net taut on the outside, whilst also trying to get the liner in all the way and secure. My liner is post war Scandinavian, and I don't want to be reminded of that by seeing a grey peak when I look in the mirror!
buy some fabric dye. OD paint will make it hard and flake off in time.
try standing on the helmet to force the liner in. thats what I had to do to hide my blue liner. really need to get around to fixing up the original liner i got on ebay
I was having a similar fitting struggle with my helmet net yesterday. My postwar liner doesnt like sitting in the shell so I was gonna use some velcro strips on the inside to hold it in (its very unlikely I'll ever want to run around in my post war liner anyway).
I also tried my original liner in the post war shell and same problem but I'm not taking any original helmet kit to a skirmish. Its worth too much

I think its the same as the webbing whether it be Khaki or OD...
At the start of the war they will have been khaki (for Africa and Sicily engagements) but as more green dye got mixed in during the mid to late part of the war, the nets got greener.
Buy some dye!?!?!? Just buy a new net! I can't remember exactly what colour they are, but mine's a dark green net, a little darker than OD7 IIRC. Infact, all of mine are pretty dark.
Is it the 1/2" or 1/4" variety?
S
Mine's a sand colour, I'm told it was what the 82nd Wore in Sicily (which is what my kit is based on)

Anyway, happy with the colour, I tried to fit it last night. The full thing, no matter how hard I tried, just would not allow the liner to 'stick'. I had a brainstorm and tried to cut it down to lessen the amount of material between the shell and the liner, but I cut it down too far. It barely covered the whole thing, and even then, was too taut to stay on. I eventually got it on, and it was looking perfect, but the F*%@ing LINER STILL WOULDN'T FIT!!!11!!! Then I saw red and threw it out the window.
To compound this, it took me another half an hour to get the liner to stay in without the net, thanks to all the pulling and twisting I subjected it to.
How did they do it in the war? Webby, Flib? Help!!?!
Around the edge of the net there is a drawstring, I put the helmet net with the corners over the front and sides, then put the 4 corners in and pull the draw string. It should all pull in. As for the liner, it takes a bit of encouragement to get in, there are brass dimples on the outside of the liner, i filed these down a little so they werent so tight against the shell.

I should sue their filter for deformation of character!
Webby I think the problem is not getting enough grip inside rather than too much (same problem that I have).
As a last resort... blu-tac? (its what I'll use if the velcro thing doesnt work).

Oh right! haha!
Put a few layers of thick tape like gaffa tape around the outside of the helmet liner, its slightly rubbery so gives a bit more grip, and would make the fit tighter.
Ahh good plan Batman.

I'm down a net now, and I really want it to work! I like nets on M1s...
Get another 1 then, they're peanuts
I know...
Duct tape works a treat Webby. Nice one. Pity its silver tape and now looks like a prop from some bad sci-fi film, but its hidden in the pot so thats ok
