I suddenly thought Id better try and break my Corcorans in again after they've been sat in a box for a year and never worn outside before.

So I walked the dog in them this morning. All was fine until I tried to walk down a hill. Now apart from to bloody aweful grip (which I was expecting) the leather bends in just above the rear "cup" and really fackin hurts! :D

Any ideas on how to make this softer / less painful other than really really thick socks?

Yeah I think pissing on em isn't going to be particularly popular in my house :D

Ah right so I guess I really just need to keep wearing them eh? Dammit! In these days of instant gratification this is most frustrating ;)

you could cover the heel and rear upper with a towel and a few heftly whacks with a hammer will 'break 'Em in'

I did this with a pair of Boot, Combat, High a few years back and had no issues afterwards

Pour hot water in them, leave in for about 1 min, pour out, put them on & take a walk, your feet will be wet but the wet leather will mould to your feet, you will need to do a few miles,

We tried soaking them in hot water but didn't do the walking in them whilst still wet routine.

It helped but they still hurt after a while.

Will try SteveD's plan this weekend.

I walked the dog in them again this arvo. Very thick socks help. Its getting there I think. Not so sure my feet could cope with a soak and walk but they are far drier that my Magnums so it would be worth it I guess.

May give it a try tomorrow :)

Incidently is it the same place on everyone elses boots? The bit just above your heel on the tendon bit?

Diggah,

Rub some vaseline (I know using that word is a minefield around here) in to the bit of the boot that is rubbing and spend some time working the leather with your fingers to soften it. Can be hard work but it helps. Wearing the boots wet really does help and as for socks, don't just wear the thickest because some types are too coarse and cause worse blisters, get some Bridgedale mountain socks, or something similar that won't slip and has a really thick heel coushin.

Cheers

Ooo good tips. Cheers very much. :)

Yeah I tend to go with mountain socks in general anyway so thats not so much of a problem. Sadly the bit thats rubbing is above any heel covering. Also as Im a size 13 most socks dont quite fit (being 11 or 12) so the heel protection is even lower. Will give a combo of those tips a go tomorrow and report back :)

Before I tried any of the above ; new development. They started leaking. Admittedly it was pretty wet out there this morning but they let in water around the mid sole area :(

Sounds like a badly attached sole. Perhaps your local cobbler can fix it.

I've taken pretty much all my ww2 shoes by the cobbler at least once (new soles and reattaching heels mostly).

I've got a year supply of vintage laces too....but they're all 36" instead of 40" :(

Hmm cant see any damage tho :(

Will do that after I've done the processes to get it fitted just incase they cause more problems

Right have just done the hot water method and walked a couple of miles with the dog. Its certainly an odd sensation putting on warm boots :)
They went on a treat and felt ok but about half way around the familiar rubbing in that one spot returned.

I'll see what they're like in the morning as I dont think I'll notice the difference until its dried out a bit more. I'll also try the hammer / vasaline methods as well but maybe I've just got to build up a callous in that area :(

Diggah, I meant to show these to you on the weekend, I have stuffed a pair of these:

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/1000000220599

in the back of my boots (they are meant to go under the tongue) , they get held in place by the back of the insoles, but then my boots a bit too large so there is the room. Stops them rubbing on the back of the heel/ankle

Ooo thats a good idea. On the day I didnt have any trouble with them tho (other than them being very cold). I think a combo of all the techniques above, plus new socks and lacing them up VERY tightly made it all fine. :)
