Cheers

I have heard from re-enacting types that it is wrong, but it looks fine to me. Though I tend to be a philistine in the eyes of those who know things about helmet colours and guns.

I'd say from the variance of colour your photos show that its within the parameters of period variance - looks OK! Looks a bit shiny though - did you use texture of any sort?

Looks fine to me, although I always think refurb jobs look a bit too shiny and new. It might be worth baking, that's supposed to darken it down a bit, but you'll destroy your oven and your house will stink for weeks.

If you know someone with a kiln or similar industrial oven it might be worth asking them.

Nah... all you need to do is mix fine grain cork in with the paint and paint it on.

There's a great guide here:

I'd be very wary of baking anything that's had a fresh coat of oil based paint on it. Google: Flashover

It's in a spray can so would it be best to mix with wood glue then paint over or paint a coat and whilst still dry to sprinkle cork on and spray another couple of coats?

I did mine many years ago with the Humbrol & ground cork method. I'd say it was fine for show but in battle use the texture rubs off leaving a myriad of holes in the paint. Now, it still looks OK at a distance (textured and non-shiny) but I'd say Humbrol is fine for model aircraft but a more industrial paint finish would be more durable, like your spray paint. If you can spray and sprinkle simultaneously (heh, two people would be easier) then do it that way so the paint and cork are integrated, not one on top of the other. Oh, and leave to dry for a couple of days to let the solvent evaporate and pop it in the oven after the wife has used it and make use of the residual heat. Remove the liner first!

I did this recently and had some BS 381C 298 shade paint mixed up at a car paint shop in matt finish. I don't know for sure but I suspect it's a bit tougher than humbrol enamel. I favoured the prush paint then sprinkle method rather than mixing it in, but whatever works for you. Oh, and don't be tempted to grind your own cork in a coffee grinder, it just won't grind it finely enough.

What you should really be doing is not worrying about the colour of your lid and getting yourself to our Devil's Hill event!!!
