I'm going to buy either a musette or ammo bag to carry thing like gas, grenades and BBs in, but I'm not sure which to get. I like the musette's size and the fact it seems to have a lot of nice pockets etc., but my question is; were they commonly used by ground infantry? Failing that, I'll get an ammo bag.

As far as i know they were more of an airborne thing, the m1910/28 pack would be more accurate although its similar to the german tornister with that really impractical design lol.
Probably a magbag might be more accurate.

An ammo bag is just the job for what you want. Get a strap for it and you are well away. It has some internal dividers in there, I keep bbs in the smaller section and grenades are in the main.
The 'Thompson' bag is good as a dump sack for magazines but does not have the capacity of the Ammo bag.
Musette bags were used by infantry if they could get them. Much more practical than the M1910/28, they were not a common sight for the enlisted man.

I have a doughboy pack for my kit, I'm thinking more of carry gas, grenades etc. The magbag I use at the moment doesn't carry a tin of green, BBs and grenades, I need the capacity.

Musettebags were reserved for Officers, Airborne troops and Mechanized troops (like Armored Infantry and Engineers).

Mechanized troops carried them because they are easier to remove when boarding vehicles. And the bags would be left with the vehicle when going into action.

If you are going with the musette bag, you'll need a GP-strap or hook it up to your M1936 suspenders.

GP/Ammo-bags certainly were carried by pretty much anyone when needed. I believe it was of up to 2 per infantry squad. Towards the end of the war this had doubled.

Was this attached to a GP strap also, or hooked to the cartridge belt, breadbag style?

It was probably carried in both ways.

I've seen a photo of GIs marching into Germany where one man was carrying a GP-bag as a rucksack with two straps.

I prefer them with a GP-strap on them though.

Thanks Flib, exactly what I needed to know.Come to think of it, I could probably get it to hook on quite high on the back of the doughboy, one hook off the D-ring and the other on a suspender strap, but it might be difficult to get at. Hmm...

I use and ammo bag Kav, A can of gas fits in nicely! Plus theres plenty of room for ammo etc... theres even a compartment stitched into the bad which holds your gas sperate, can put your gun loob in there too! :)

I would recommend you use the shoulder strap, and then shorten the strap so it sits under your arm, you can swing it around then if and when you need it.

I wear mine like the attached pic, just over my kidney, that way its out of the way when you ly down, but easily brought around
