Just wondering how much different the kit carried by medics, as opposed to the standard troops was. Im pretty new to the WW2 scene, and ive been building a loadout based on a NCO in the 101st Airborne. However, I often end up playing the 'medic' in airsoft games, so I suspect I might end up in a similar role in WW2 airsoft. As such, to get people recongising me as a medic and not as just a soldier, is it a matter of simply spraying the red cross symbol onto my helmet, or are there other items of kit and such I will need
Yeah, usually its the webbing bags on the medic harness, bandoliers were used for carrying extra medical equipment, such as sulphur packs and bandages. Medic usually carried 2 water canteens, extra one I can only assume for cleaning wounds.
I believe that painting a Red Cross on your helmet also removes you from the ability to carry a gun under the Geneva convention. Combat medics would have been like any other troops, maybe a medic bag on a GP strap. Non-combattant medics, ie the ones who aren't supposed to be shot at, put crosses on their helmet / band on the upper left arm (a'la Wade off SPR and Roe off BoB)
You'll also notice that Navy Corpsmen (Marine Medics) wont be displaying the red cross, as the Japanese did not sign the Geneva convention, so a red cross wouldn't have helped (other than getting them shot as a priority)

And Webby knows from bitter experience how much notice even the Germans take of the red cross...
It makes a great target.
Not Cricket! I think I got shot more than anyone else.

You dont need the harness and medic pouches. It's not unusual to see the musette bag used by medics.

I guess, but the standard look is to have the harness.

Some Germans in the top picture. They look to be arguing. Probably about whose turn it is to make the coffee.

I noticed that, they look like Fjr medics. Either green or sumpf smocks I'd guess as splinter usually shows more contrast and the pattern shows more. Could also be worn, dirty and faded splinter though.
Interesting picture. I wonder where and when?

I dont think it would have been that uncommon for Allied medics to be treating injured German POWs, especially with the assistance of German Medic POWs too. US infantry and FJR, prolly July/August time.

I remember reading/seeing (somewhere) that in one chaps company they had them all line up and every tenth man was told 'you're now a medic, and you' and so on . . .
Might have been in the extras from BoB or maybe in an Ambrose title ?
So quite possibly spurious then! Hehe

i sometimes play a medic role in airsoft, its great fun doing all of that running around, but very fustrating when your unarmed and you have a perfect line on someone.
