Hi Guys,

Hoping that i can get some advice from everyone, i'm putting together a SS loadout and am looking to get a feldgrau tunic as well as a smock. A daft question, but are the smocks generally cut 'larger' than standard battle dress? Or do you just have to go a size up from your tunic???

Thanks everyone!

Smocks tend to have a limited number of sizes and cover a range, say for example 38" to 42" is size 1, 42 to 46 size 2 etc. You dont usually buy them for specific chest size. Baggy and shapeless is best.
First pattern are authentic for early and late war, second pattern not so versatile but I dont think you'll be excluded form an early war game in a late smock.
Dont get hung up on matching the same pattern for your smock and helmet cover. They rarely matched during the war and it makes you a little more interesting.
I think the plane tree patterns look better and work better than oak. The black over print breaks up the shape very well. That said a nicely worn blurred edge always looks great.

Richard Underwood used to do SS smocks that had mismatched camo on the sleeves and cuffs which I always thought was quite cool.

Thanks guys, what about with a Peadot jacket? I've read that they were designed to be worn over a Feldgrau tunic in the winter (and alone in the summer). Is it usual to combine them or best to wear one or the other (feldgrau or peadot?)??

Whilst there are some pics of a pea dot tunic being worn over a Feldgrau tunic, I believe it was more common to be worn as a tunic in its own right. It does also limit your authenticity to 44 or 45 only, if you're bothered about that.

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier

Combinations of the two were quite common in certain units if you want to be super correct.
I dont think Das Reich got much Pea dot for example.
I have worn dot over field greys when it is cold, you see a lot of that in the Bulge footage and pictures.

Das Reich got plenty of dot pattern around the time of the Normandy invasions. Lots of pics showing various SS units wearing dot tunics over their field greys especially around the Ardennes Offensive and early 45. Common sense, if its the middle of winter wear as many layers as possible. If its the heat of the summer shirt and tunic is the way forward.
