Due to their rarity, I guess it wasn't really a common issue. Obviously, with smocks and pea dots, you could see the Feldgrau tunic collar tabs.

As Andy says, the SS rank badges are all on the jacket collar so they'd stick out over the top of the smock or M44 anyway. Officers might also wear distinctive things like long boots, map cases etc and i I am sure the soldiers would know who the scary company NCOs were :)

Cheers

There were two types of pea dot camo. M43 which was a brighter better quality material and m44 which was browner and a rougher finish herring bone.
Ss troops wore both they were designed to be worn over the standard uniform but in hot weather this was not always the case.
Standard insignia was the arm eagle with rank insignia off bars and oak leaves the latter being rare.
Italian camo was often used for trousers mainly by 1st and 12th divisions from 1944 onwards taken from stocks of captured material. Sometimes you see pics of 4 pocket tunics in Italian particularly amongst tank crews. There is a great pic of max wunsche in a turret wearing such a jacket.

As far as I am aware, pea dot came into being in 1944 - hence it's other nomer "dot 44". There were a number of other camo patterns used before that, but they were in smock or later, winter parka/trouser format.
